HR Question for running

Did my first 1/2 Marathon yesterday in 1:52:36. I was going back and looking at the HR data from my Garmin and I noticed that my HR was up around the 170s or higher most of the run. I thought my max was 186. According to Garmin this sustained rate was around 95% and higher of my max HR. Can someone really sustain that over a 1/2 marathon or is my max probably higher? Wish I could get my rate lower and it seems to be lowering over time, but I feel good when I run at this pace.

Thanks.

How did you get 186 as your max?

Great job on your HM - killer time for your first one!

It was an estimate between the 220-39 (my age at the time) formula and me going as fast as I was able about 6 mos ago and hitting that rate. I probably need to go attack a good hill and see what happens then.

I just found it interesting that I or anyone could hold 90/95% of max over that distance/time. Didn't seem right.

Thank you. I was stoked to complete one. I am starting to enjoy running a bit more than cycling...

I haven't used a hr monitor recently, but I used to play with it a bunch. In 2005, my max HR was 206 (Actual max from hill repeats) with a resting HR of 49. For a sprint tri, I would average around 195-97 and for an oly I would average around 192-195. Normal sitting around in class HR was ~80 and most training was 150s-180s. So it is possible...

Great half-marathon time!

What do you think your exertion was? Did you run at your threshold pace or faster? I used to use a Polar HR monitor all the time and sometimes it would give me screwy measurements- so you have to factor in how you felt too. Running at 90 - 95% max is a hard effort and you would know it.

Time to pick your marathon!

I felt like I was working but I felt like I could have pushed a bit harder. My 6-8 mile times recently were as good as 8min/mi as the weather had cooled some. I entered another 1/2 on Thanksgiving morning and a full on 12/20! Having fun.

Yes you can really go that far at that burn rate. I did a 15K last saturday at 98% Max HR for the whole thing. Then this weekend I did an olypic and the run was at 95% of Max HR for the entire run. Once you have built up your body's ability to tolerate the Lactic Acid you can push further and further. I've got a Half marathon in 3 weeks and will be doing 95-100% max HR for the whole race. Sounds really goofy at first, especially if you read the signs at the gym that say you can only sustain that for a few minutes. HA!

Pain is weakness leaving the body.

Also you can still push more and not change your Max HR. Most people think that your Max HR also means the fastest you can go, but it doesn't. All it means is that that is the fastest your heart can pump oxygen to your muscles, thus removing the Lactic build up.

Pain is weakness leaving the body.

On average lactate threshold based on heart rate (called heart rate threshold) occurs at about 70% of VO2 max, and 90% of maximum heart rate. So your measurements seem pretty accurate and numbers seem to match. The deceiving part is your true lactate threshold as would be measured in a lab wouldn't be as high as you think compared to measuring it based on heart rate.
Congrats on the HM.
