old Bull, young calf

I was wondering if any one can assist with my calf problem. I recently bumped my running miles up to 40 per week and all of a sudden whenever I run I am getting the start of calf cramps. They do not cramp up all the way but both start to feel extremely tight and on the verge of cramping. Then tonight during a swim session my right calf completely cramped up. I could feel a huge knot swell up on the inside of my leg. Like I said during the runs it starts but never actually cramps up. My calfs have always been relatively tight but never had any previous problems. Hydration should not be a problem as I buy a gallon of H2O daily and usually finish it by 5pm and continue to hydrate after that. Any suggestions? or has anyone had anything similar?

You could be flushing electrolytes with that volume of water. Are you taking in adequate electrolytes during exercise to go with all that water? Stretching before and after? What was previous run volume- how fast did you increase mileage?

Try the strassburg sock. It is designed for Planter Faciitis but helped me get rid of achilles tendonitis that was caused by tight calfs. You can buy it at almost any running store. Or you could try compression socks.

Thanks. I do were compression socks but only at night for a couple hours before bed. I am picking up a electrolyte pill tommorrow based on your recomendations.

As far as my run volume increase It jumped from about 20 miles to mid 30's and now 40's. ( I know 10% rule, shame on me but I signed up for a ultra marathon and just said "screw it, lets do it")

I used to get calf cramps playing water polo, just as I rose up to shoot.
I have had calf cramps in the last 200m of an IM swim.
May not be related to your running at all.

Life is a journey and you need to experiment (cautiously) to find out about your body and its reaction to exercise.
Maybe an "electrolyte Pill" is sufficient to solve your problem.
Finding out how many per hour of your usual running is an experiemnt.
Start out with small changes to your routine.
Maybe an electrolyte pill is the perfect solution.
Maybe an electrolyte pill is overkill.
Try a teaspoon of salt washed down with a glass of water before your long runs.
See what happens.

Age, Weight, Experience, gender, are all relevant.
