So since I've started to eat very healthy again (when my father passed away early this year I let training and nutrition slip and shot up 20lbs from race weight) I thought it might be cool to have a thread on foods that perform the same role as specialty foods but in a much more economically efficient manner.

These would be foods that you could use in place of a more expensive supplement or lifestyle food.

Gatorade/Sports Drink. - Fruit juice diluted with water with a pinch of salt added.

Cliff Blocks - Peanut butter M&M's, they have 240 calories 45% carbs, 8% protein, can be high fat if used all the time (47%)

Recovery Drink - Chocolate Milk - there have actually been several articles about the childhood fav actually outperforming the designer drinks

Electrolytes/Salt Tabs - (From POC) Salt packets from fast food outlets (I refuse to call mcdonalds a restaurant) I've tried this and it has worked for me so far. You can actually get the flavored salts for mixed drinks at the Liquor store aswell

So what do you guys use or have used when you were on a budget?

Buy your veggies at a vegetable stand. You can save over 60% on your fruit and veggie bill in a month. I also buy my meats at a meat market- I get a higher grade meat for an equal or lower price than the supermarket.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

Nope, it's there. Maybe in icecream toppings, but still there tasting like a little slice of hell. :) (can you tell I'm not a fan). As for salt packets instead of electrolyte tabs, watch out. your McD's salt packs are just NaCl and your needs for electrolytes is more than just Na+ and Cl- so you might try to find something that will give you a little more K, P, and other goodies. Other than that I say go for it. I did however give up simple sugars during training and found a noticeable improvement (aka dropped peanut m&m's for Hammer Gel etc). The fruit juice and chocolate milk I've got your back on. good luck.

Now that's an awesome set of recipes! It's "Real Food" with "Real Nutrition"

You can make your own power bars. i really like Alton Brown's recipes. You can also get potassium salts from the grocery store (I think!).

I'm going to start making my own energy bars too. I printed several good (some raw) recipes that I am going to try....they look super easy to make too. The organic bars like Luna, Lara and Hammer are yummy, but expensive. I think I can make them for a lot less and add what I want and need in them.
