Base training for IM
A popular plan others on the site have used:

when's your ironman? you need some time off to recover from your marathon before youstart your ironman training.

You should maintain fitness between season end and base training start, 36 weeks is great and includes base and ramp up, but what to do with that extra 16 weeks.
Sounds like running is taken care of with marathon training, but you may want to consider swim and bike 2-3 times a week at maintenance level intensity. Some use the time to work on technique and weaknesses. The in-between is also a good time to get into the gym to work on strength and core.
Work back 36 weeks from your IM to determine the in-between time and when to begin maintenance training. Once the marathon is over ease back on the run for recovery.
Agree with Cayman. I'm using my off "off season" to get back in the gym, focus on core, increase run volume, take swim lessons, take my road bike out in groups more and really figure out how to train with power.
Don't jump right into IM specific training until you have to, 36 weeks is a long time to keep focused on your IM, no need to start early. Just maintain a solid base and make sure to throw some fun things in there.

I'm planning on starting the 36 week training plan here with a few modification. But right now i'm working on my weaknesses which i think are swim and bike.
My running is taken care of since i have a couple marathons to run until the 36 week start.
Also i'm working on my core (thanks to Core thread ;)
What IM are you doing?

WI in Sept. I just wondered about how much swimming or biking I should be doing. So I'll get back into the gym and also start some pilates. Thanks for the ideas.
How much swimming and biking is an individual thing during the in-between season. Personally, I still maintain close to mid-IM training weekly levels, just at a lower intensity @ 50-60%: swim 8-10,000yds, bike 70-80 miles and run probably too much. Another way to look at is 2-3-4 days a week, insert the number of hours/miles you are comfortable with and can fit into your schedule. Keep it slow(er) and easy, it's only a maintenance program. Slow it down enough to work on technique and have some fun.

I know you guys will think I'm nuts...but I'm looking for some kind of plan that I can follow before my IM plan starts. I feel like I'm floundering. I have my first marathon in Dec in Vegas so I have a running plan that I am following. I would just like a schedule. Any thoughts?
Thanks!
