Road or MTB helmet

Hello,

I have always been using road bike helmets, until I had a bike crash during a Triathlon in July.
Thanks to the helmet no head injury albeit the helmet is to be replaced.
In the bike shop I hesitated between a road helmet and an MTB one.
I opted for the road one on a price basis (really stupid rationale when one shops for protection).
I am still unsure the road one provides more protection than the MTB one even if both pass the CE certification.
In the Netherlands, I have seen roadies with MTB's helmet and the other way around.
Thus my question: what are the differences in protection between the MTB and the Road helmet ?
Thanks in advance,
Lionel

I'm not sure about safety standards in the Netherlands, but I'm pretty sure that all bicycle helmets sold in the US - either road or MTB - have to pass the same safety standards, regardless of price (ie, more expensive ones do NOT offer more protection) or whether they are used on road or trail.

more lightweight and venting = more $
otherwise they're all equally safe

mtb helmets have the visor for whatever reason...i never really understood the rationale of that making it for off-road use...mtb'ers don't use the cool little cycling caps?

There is no real difference between a MTB and road helmet. In fact most brands have the same helmet in difference colors and with a visor to make a MTB lid.

my sweep came with a visor, I've just never put it on
