First Crash

I was having an awesome time this weekend and was doing the Vice Versa Reverse Sprint on Saturday morning when I had my first bike accident. It wasn't so much a crash as a solo wipe-out, though. Fortunately, I happened to do it right in front of my wife (married 2 months tomorrow!), all the spectators, race officials, police and EMTs so I had help pretty quick.

Here I am about 4 seconds beforehand:

Looking pretty good and actually middle of the pack for once this year. Then 4 seconds after that I went around the corner, possibly a little too tight, possibly hitting a patch of sand/tiny gravel since it was a block from the beach, but in any event my rear tire slid out from under me and down I went. My grade school music teacher said, "If you're going to screw up, do it loud." Man, was I loud after I stopped skidding.

Here I am with the paramedics after the adrenaline kicked in so I wasn't feeling much pain:

Didn't hit my head or my face, so at least I'm still pretty ;-) Thought I broke my left thumb, but a trip to the hospital cleared that. I did end up taking the skin off my right hand, screwing up my left thumb, tore up my left elbow, a minor cut on the right, road rash on my right hip and chest, and lost a bunch of skin on my right knee. Today's actually the first day I can type without leaking all over the place. Here's some highlights since we all love pics :-)

Thankfully ended up with no stitches or broken bones, just a highly inconvenient collection of abrasions which keeps me from being able to do much. My thumb and knee are killing me so it's back to the couch for me. If you're going to end the season might as well go out with a bang, right?

Ouch...

Blame the white glove guy in the top picture. :) He should have pointed better.

First things first - did you finish the race before the medical attention ;-)

J/K - Glad to see you're okay and were able to come out with only scratches and bruises - best of luck in the recovery.

1. As Dana wrote on my Facebook when I crashed last week, "Is the bike ok?? Please tell me the bike is ok? Oh God not the bike."
2. Shave.

glad you're okay...
since you're still a newlywed, I am sure your wife would be happy to kiss it better :)
but don't expect that kind of treatment for long...eventually, it'll just be HTFU!

I knew I could count on you for the angle from the gutter, before me too! ;-)

Just make sure you start with the elbow and then tell her about the pain you have on your upper inner thigh!

Sorry to hear about the crash. Look into Tegaderm Patches/Bandages they are awesome at keeping road rash clean while it heals and you don't have to go through the pain of changing them. You will have to shave the area around first though.

Thanks for the well-wishes. My wife worked from home the last two days to take care of me, so that was definitely nice ;-)

Actually, the guy with the white glove pointing out the turn was wearing a gorilla costume; possibly with coconut bra. I have no idea why.

The bike... I don't know if it's ok. As far as I can tell it looks mostly all right, except the right hood is angled to the center of the bike, there's a big chunk of plastic missing from the end of the right aerobar, and a patch of scratches on the right side of the top tube. I don't know if any of the drive train is damaged, but it'll be heading into the shop tomorrow to get straightened out.

And my wife likes me hairy, so no shaving for me ;-) She was pretty freaked out when she saw me go down, but she handled it well (right until the hospital tech was cleaning out my wounds).

My shopping list for next season includes new tri shorts and gloves. Possibly new tires with better turning grip :-P

Oooohh, before & after pix! Great job.

They do say triathletes go great in straight lines, not so great on corners.
You're living proof.

and I'm glad to hear you're still living too.

How come you hurt the heel of your hand like that? The glove should have covered it, no?

Hmmm... nope, I don't think so... crashing near 1st aid, yes, but I think in this case crashing near a gorilla may cancel that out. Especially a gloved one. May need to consult the rules on this.

+1 on speedy recovery.

Glad that wasn't me in front of my wife. She would have laughed her ass off after she knew I was ok. I would have never been able to live this one down. That's what happens I guess when you have been married for 17 years!

Good thing you are newly weds! Congrats on the marriage. Best of Luck!

The gloves totally would have covered the heel of my hand if I was wearing them. The lower part of my thumb too. I used to have a pair, but I don't know what happened to them. I'll definitely be picking up a pair. Maybe some knee pads, wrist guards, goalie mask... ;-)

Ouch ! Sorry to hear bout the crash. Only on trifuel can we find a thread with a crash incident coupled with a reference to a braless gorilla.

One another note - wasn't this the Team Brandon race that JS Multisport put on? I'm sure a lot of us NJ'ers know of them ... Dad races with his son in a inflatable boat, bike trailer, and wheelchair.

I've seen the "team" at a few NJ shore events -- very moving and inspirational.

Hope your healing is progressing well.

But I always wondered why do cyclists not wear any protective gear. Sometimes going at speeds up to 35-40mph is not very safe and helmet does protect your head but what about the rest of the body. I guess one answer would be aerodynamics and another answer would be HTFU hahaha

That was the Team Brandon race. It was pretty cool.

Yeah, it's definitely in HTFU territory ;-)
