Training has been quite the rocky road for me. I signed up for my first Ironman, and my wife lost her job. I bought a tri bike, then I lost my job. We relocated got new jobs, I started swimming, and messed up my AC joint. Started PT for the shoulder, went running, and injured my foot.

The shoulder is finally back to 100% but my foot has a stress fracture and I think I have to withdraw from IMAZ, which is just about 8 weeks out. I've been having so much fun training and planning, but this just feels crushing. It is what it is and I'm moving forward. Just wishing I could pull of IMAZ.

I see the withdraw option for $150 back, but does anyone know about deferring entry til the next year? I'd really like to do an IM next year, but I doubt I can get into any close to the northeast at this point. I signed up for a 70.3 (rhode Island) and will prob sign up for timberman too, but really want to do the big distance. Any ideas would be great!
Best,
Ithinkican

Thanks Joe. I did see the withdraw info. I'm trying to see if I can somehow defer though. Right now it looks like Cozumel or Louisville might be the best bet for an MDOT event. I have thought about going the non mdot route, but I would like the mdot experience.
I tried sending something to info@ironman.com as they linked that direct from the imaz website, but i get an error message saying essentially, that no such email address exists.

You are trained enough right now to finish IMAZ.

Consider this a long taper.
Avoid weight bearing exercise, ie, running training, (except water running!)

Take this as an opportunity to perfect your swim technique, avoid intense swim training to spare your AC joint. We don't need two handicaps here. You can probably SPIN on the bike without hurting the stress fracture. Check with your MD. Use ice daily on it.

Start planning your strategy RIGHT NOW, for how you will finish IMAZ and earn your first IM cap.
You will be able to perform as usual on the swim and bike. You wil be able to finish the run even if it takes a six hour walk and a bottle of ibuprofen.

Truat me, I've been there. I pulled a calf muscle 12 days before finishing IMC 2006.

She admits, though, that this lesson has not come easy: "As an endurance athlete, it took me a long time before I was ready to accept the importance of flexibility and strength training. My entire fitness program used to be based on cardiovascular conditioning. Eventually my body broke down and I sustained a stress fracture in my ankle in June of '93. But instead of giving up on the Ironman that year, I focused on what I could do: lots of stretching, strength training and swimming with some cycling.

"I ended up winning the Ironman that year, even though I really wasn't in great cardiovascular shape. When I look back and question what got me through the run, I realize now that besides a lot of heart-it was the strong and flexible muscles in my legs that helped me to keep moving through those last difficult miles."

Thankx POC. The damn gears up stairs are turning again. I'll hold on it a bit and see what happens. Still might be time to sign up for IM Louisville. Slots still open for '10 and its a bit closer to home. Seriously, thx, theres alot to be said about Ironwill and gritting it out in my opinion.

As far as the Northeast area, Firm-racing has tried to put on a full distance race the last few years and there is one in Plymouth, Ma every year. Not Ironman races but all the same distances.

I went into this years IMLP knowing I'd have to pretty much walk the marathon. Which is no big deal because, believe me...I wasn't alone! It hurt, but that's Ironman!
I'm going with POC on this...if your swimming and biking are ok, go, but know that you're walking. You never know if you WILL get another chance to do an IM.
Best of luck and let us knew what happens.
