Just curious for people who have done an IM; have you ever felt faint on the run? and if so do you think it was due to low sodium? How do you manage that?
Thx

have never done an IM but have run plenty of marathons and yes, electrolytes will help balance out things like feeling faint. However, what you're doing, what I aspire to do, is crazy and torturous to the body so some discomfort is to be expected. What I've found that I really like is using a sports drink or electrolyte tabs. If you want more info on basic race nutrition hammer also has a little book that they give out commonly with first orders (I'd bet if you asked they'd just send you one) that explains what they feel is the recommended intake for calories, electrolytes, proteins etc. during a race. I'm very happy with Hammer Gel, but there are many out there. Make sure you do your research so you don't end up with just a bunch of sugar.

After fainting and getting a DNF ( mile 13 on the run ) at my first attempt at the distance this past weekend I can tell you first hand... The "faint" feeling is serious. When I got checked into medical I weighed in at a neg. 10lbs on the day, had a hr of 32, and a core body temp of 95. It was bad news. For me, aside from the obvious dehydration, I think I needed ALOT more sodium. For the hour leading up to my meltdown, I was feeling the mental-haze of the race and thought it was nothing more than simply the distance chippin away at me... when in fact it was due to major nutritional deficits accrued throughout the day.

Intake on the bike: 6 x 16oz bottles of accellerade + 2x 20oz bottles of gatorade + 5 clif bars
Intake on the run: 4 hammer gels and about 4 cups of water, 4 cups of gatorade

I'm happy to say I'm feeling better and have registered for IMWI2010... redemption.

I was wondering what happened to you. I am sorry you had that experience and I fear it for myself. It sounds like you took in quite a bit to me! I am glad you are feeling better, and will use this as a learning experience for the next one.

Yeah... a loss of electrolytes will do that.
The past 8 months I've been using Gu Roctane, water and Succeed! Caps (1 to two an hour)...I've never felt better on long training rides and runs and despite being a cripple at IMLP..I felt great! Succeed! Caps have higher amounts of Na and K than other brands. (It's baking soda) I've used them since 1996. I think the BCA's in the Gu help. I've used the drinks from Succeed! (Clip, Amino also with BCA's) with good success too. (Sorry, don't mean to be an ad here, but I think the stuff is quite good.)
When I'm at a long event and feel woozy or get sick, even heave...I slow down to a walk, stop at the next aid station, get in some soup if they have it or solid food with salt even if I'm already supplementing.. When I feel better, I'm off. A finish is most important to me, not a time ...I haven't DNF'd in 30 of the last 40 years following that plan.

Jhudalla-
I'm glad u registered for IMWI 2010. I felt faint at about mile 16 and that's when I thought it was lack of sodium/electroloties and too much water. I was peeing on the run at every aid station and my pee was white so when I felt faint I stopped drinking so much water and started to pound chicken broth and walk, I felt better within 15-20 mins.

I agree Anton walk it off if u can to try to balance yourself out, I guess sometimes that doesn't even work.
My next IM I'm getting a nutrition coach, if one exists!

I've experienced all of the weird symptoms I think.

Salt?

Oh yeah. I pack a handful of those little packages of salt you get at KFC and McDs free.
I just rip one open and pour it on my tongue, then wash it down with a gulp of water. Job done.

Glad that you are doing okay - was also wondering what happened.

Last year at IMWI and I went down in T2 - ended up getting 6 IVs - so my mantra for 2010 is redemption as well. :)

I felt dizzy at IMWI at about mile 9 of the run. Took 2 E-caps (Endurolytes) and it went away. consumed Gatorade and ice the rest of the time and slowed to prevent further overheating. Problem under control, but not solved. At least I was able to finish at my goal time!

PoC mentioned the salt a couple of months back and I gave it a try in my long rides and runs and it works really well. Now everytime I go for a BigMac I bring the little packages of salt w/me

Poc-
so you just take a few salt packets from mcdonalds on your IM run, now how many do you take during the marathon?

Also do you wait to take them when u are feeling "low" or do you just take them at a certain mile marker?

I turned at Barcelo Road to begin the out and back at about 110k and as I stood to climb the short steep slope up to the stop sign my quads cramped sharply. I pulled over around the corner, having no choice. I ripped open 5 salt packages and swallowed them with copious amounts of water knowing there was an aid station not far up the road and in 90 seconds the cramps were gone with no recurrence.

As a precaution I took 2 salt packages at the start of the run, but then I went to the chicken soup and pretzels.

This year I ingested the salt packages in pairs at regular intervals starting at Osoyoos on the bike before beginning the Richter climb. No cramps.

It has been reported in Triathlete Magazine this year that it would be difficult to take in too much salt and no harm in a slight excess anyway.
Lisa Bentley swears by her salt tabs/sticks whatever they are. I just use the KFC salt packages because they are small, neat, readily available and free.

ftr, I weigh 220lbs and sweat only moderately although in 2005 my jersey had salt lines all over it and I jumped in the lake at T2 to cool off. It cost me 8 minutes but it was sure worth it!

I also put a Power Gel in the little Fuel Belt pocket. If it is an Ironman, one of my flasks contains 5 Power Gels with a bit of water to make it more liquid. In my little Fuel Belt box on my bike, I carry my C02 dispenser, a cartridge, my salt pills and a few Power Gels and maybe a few cut up bits of Power Bar. When I am training, I carry my tools and some ID and some money as well
