Since a lot of folks link to some of my various product reviews (Garmin's mostly) here fairly often, I figured I'd let folks know that I posted a pretty detailed (like 60+ pages detailed) review of the new Garmin 310XT. Hopefully ya'll find it useful.

Do you get compensated for doing these reviews?

I had the same thought. Either you're getting paid by Garmin (which I don't really think you're shilling for them), or you should be. Idea: You could parlay this in-depth of a review into getting other stuff from other companies for you to test and review. My point is, if I was in marketing at Garmin, I'd send you any Garmin product you wanted if you "promised" to write more reviews. BicycleSnobNYC (bikesnobnyc.blogspot.com/) receives bikes - entire bikes, not just Garmin watches - unsolicited and he rides 'em around and absolutely crucifies them, but smaller fabricators who can't buy four-color glossies in Bicycling want pub, any kind of pub, and he brings an audience. Build up your audience then shop-out and see if companies will send you stuff to write about. The options are limitless: scales, lights, supplements. You'll be their guinea pig who has a well-followed blog.

I had almost all of them already from past Garmin devices, the only one I purchased myself was the newer footpod - which I bought back about 3 or so months ago when it first came out.

Nope - nothing, in fact, the watch is getting boxed up tonight and going back to Garmin tomorrow morning (they pay shipping). I just ran my last run with it a few mins ago (where it ironically ran out of battery as I forgot to charge it).

Though sometimes I do keep things POM juice is sending me some samples of juice to test out - I suppose I get to keep those. ;) Though the arguement could be made I'm giving them away when I'm done...

I don't look for compensation, nor receive any. Some companies have given me smaller (read: cheaper) products to test out and then I'm told to just keep them - like the POM juice or a pair of footbeds once. Many companies are starting to figure out the power of the non-professional media in selling their products. That's not to say they are all rosy. I've given pretty lukewarm/bad reviews to other companies (including the Garmin 405 for example), in the past. I'm always pretty clear in my reviews as to whether I purchased the product, or it's a trial product, or it's being sent to me to keep. The majority of my reviews though I purchased myself (all my other Garmin reviews for example).

As for why I do them so detailed, it's just simply interesting to me. I'm a computer engineer in my normal life, so I'm pretty much a geek at heart. I have far more interest in doing a GPS related review than one for Monkey Butt powder or detergent (both of which I've been offfered in the pass). I understand the technology (GPS and computers) well enough to know all the snags, and seperate the fact from the fiction. But for the most part, anything that's triathlon related (or food...I like food...and travel), I'm game for testing out and reviewing.

As an aside, I do enjoy reading Bike Snob from time to time, good (and hilarious) stuff. :)

I believe Garmin sent him this one as a sample model to have the review written. He didn't order it at all.

Correct. Garmin sent me just the 310XT base unit. I seperately bought the foot pod (and also quick release kit). The foodpod is compatible with all my other Garmin's and I like the newer (read: tiny) style compared to the massive old one. As for the quick release strap, I figured if I liked the unit itself enough, then I'd end up buying one. If not, at worst it was $25 sunk cost.

The Garmin supplied test/demo/review unit went back today, and last night I ordered a 310XT for myself...should arrive next week sometime.
