Alright I was feeling really good about my first HIM, Augusta Sept 27th. I did a long run 2 weeks ago (11 miles) and the upper outside part of my right knee started to hurt. After some online research- I think its my IT band??? I rested for a week then tried a short run last weekend, made it about 2 miles before it started hurting. rested another week, adding in some ITB stretches. Tried to run tonight but it was painful after about 2 miles. I know I need probably need to go to the doc, and probably will this week. (Have high deductible plan, and have not used it at all this year $$). The question, is this something I can run through on race day? Can I continue to taper, do very little/no running, stretch daily/ice, continue to bike and swim, and just walk/ run the half mary? This is my last race till March, my first HIM and I doubt if I do this distance again for a few years. I have no real time goals, just to finish under the cutoff. Also could it be my shoes, I was fitted at Fleet Feet a few months ago and since feel like I'm falling off the outside of my shoes, Thanks

Yep definitely sounds like ur ITB. Its the most common of injuries that eventuate from running.

I'd goto the physio so he can gauge how bad it is. Toughest thing about ITB is the only way u can really recover from it is rest. Best way to avoid it is being very thorough with your stretches, before and after exercise, as well as incorporating stretches morning and night.

For your HIM, i'd do a few sessions with the physio right away, and they will be the best person to gauge what you should / shouldnt do.

Hope it all works out and you achieve your goal :o]

Definitely the IT band. I had a mild one and thankfully it went away. My buddy had a major one a few weeks before our marathon and it practically killed him. The best thing to do is to do absolutely nothing from now till the event. Any movement in bending the knee will just delay the healing process. Besides two weeks out won't hurt you too bad. It may slow you just a bit, but the alternative is to keep traininng, injuring the knee more and then be horrible for the big day.

My buddy used one of those velcro straps right above his knee the day of the race and it worked great (so he tells me). Some how it keeps the IT band locked in place so it does rub against the bone during the run. If he reads this hopefully he will respond to you and giveyou his input!

Best of luck!

Pain is weakness leaving the body.

I hope the doctor gives you good news. I might suggest heating before exercise as well.
