Ironman Training and The Flu

I've been training very hard for Ironman Florida on 11/7, but I have had flu-like symptoms all week. I haven't trained since Monday and I may not be able to train much this weekend based on how I feel. Prior to this week, I had worked up to 80 mile bike/60 minute run bricks, 20 mile runs, and 2 mile open water swims. It seems like this is a crucial training period being that I'm almost 8 weeks out from the race? I guess I'm being paranoid and I'm asking Ironman veterans to tell me that a week off doesn't mean I have to take a knee on the race. In the back of my mind, I suppose I realize that I have time to recover from this week off. I would just like to hear you guys say it.

Thanks in advance for the support.

If you have the flu now, my bet is that taking a week off will actually give you a better race than trying to train through it. Get rest, keep hydrated, and work back slowly.

Ditto!!!

Bag it...take the week and fully recoup. The rest WILL be better for you and +1 to PJT.
You could worsen the symptoms if you try and train through it and if you come back too fast, you'll smack yourself back down.

You're at a critical time period - but not because of this particular workout - but because of the effect it will have if you don't get better. Your sickness WILL drag on if you try and go out and knock out a hard weekend.

In general, my coaches rule is as long as your not running a fever you can mostly train as normal. But if you're running any sort of fever (or symptoms above the neck), then hold off. Obviously, if you're sick as crap but without a fever, do the smart thing.

Again though - it's far more critical to get better and go into next week feeling healthy.

Thanks for the input guys. It's going to be movies for me this weekend, and hopefully starting fresh on Monday.

Good call...
