What to do?
Have you thought about getting a couple of massages? Ive had some ITB problems in the past and I good massage has worked wonders! Good luck in the recovery!
With 2 weeks you should be tapering anyway. I would take it easy and if need be get the steroid shot sooner that later.
A few massages sound good too, and ice it whenever you are active.
'Nothing to it, but to do it!'
Cadence Guy, yes I have had 2 massages and it helped some, but maybe I should go get another one this weekend. I can always find any excuse for a massage!
Beads, yes I am in taper mode and icing after every workout.
The last time I had a steroid shot it was in my ankle about 4 years ago, and I couldn't walk for 2 days! Just don't want this to be the case again.
Thanks for the replies!

Did you PT recommend hip exercises? When I was having IT Band problems that was the culprit - weak hip flexors. That's not a quick fix. Not sure I can make good suggestions on what to do in the short term other than rest.
I had some issues with ITB training for a marathon. It was mild until the first time it flared in the race at about mile 16. I could barely walk and it dragged my time way down. I did not go to the doctor but I did a lot of research online. A couple stretches and strengthening exercises really worked well for me. I would try everything you see but the ones that worked the best for me are stretch number 3 here:

And where the lady is standing on like a step thing at the bottom with one leg hanging off here:

The second stretch really helped the most. Do that everyday for like a week with no running or very light running. I would do like 2 or 3 sets of 10. It stretches your IT band and strengthens it. If you do it right, you will feel the part of your leg it is strengthening (took me a while to figure out how to do it). I still do this to stretch it out and strengthen it a little. I have not had problems since.
I would try as many different tactics as you can, and dont run on it if it hurts. That will only make it worse. Also RICE. Hope you recover quick and good luck on your half.
Looks like some good suggestions here for massage, ice, rest, and stretches. I'm sure you're disappointed given that it's your first HIM and looks to be in your hometown.
Just be careful... you should be tapering down anyway so you may be able to get by with the regimen described and some light elliptical work. Just don't do any permanent damage ok? There will be more races.

One of my favourite things is getting physio on my ITB atm...always brings a smile to my face :(
Don't count the days, make days count.
Hi motherbrucker,
I personally struggled with IT Band for a very long time. After testing and trying just about EVERYTHING I decided to take the guesswork out of it and create a resource for people who have this frustrating injury. You can check it out at http://www.bulletproofknee.com
Best of luck,

Okay, so I am a fairly new Trifuel member and I have found this site amazing and packed with great info. This is my first post and I am needing a little advice.
My first Half is in 15 days, Redman Triathlon. (Just writing that makes nerves stir in my stomach!) My IT band flared up in a sprint race on Aug. 2. I kept training, but soon found that I could not run at all due to the pain. Saw my orthopedic 2 weeks ago and I have a severe case of ITBS. So bad, my hip was also swelling when cycling. He put me on a steroid pack and PT for a week. He said if it was not better he would give me steroid injections, but wanted to try PT first since I was having pain in hip and knee. Seemed to be getting better as I was doing PT and not running at all. (Just doing elliptical.) I rode 68 miles last weekend without any swelling in my hip and this week still has been good with the hip swelling.
Well I ran last night and was very pissed when 5 minutes into my run my knee started hurting. The pain is better, but still there. I ran 6 miles last night and in my head thought to myself yes, I can run 13 on this stupid knee if the pain is dull like this. Did my stretching and excercises when I got home. Well my knee hurt so bad I woke up 3 times in the middle of the night and it is hurting as I type this.
So here is where my dilemma comes in. Should I go get the steroid shot in my knee or just take it easy for 15 days? (which taper will be a factor soon.) I just don't know what to do and would like to hear some feedback from you all!
THANKS!
Britney
