Locker Broken Into

I had a pretty crappy day yesterday. I went to my gym (Bally's Total Fitness, Portland, OR) to work out between 11 am- 1pm. I leave and as I'm driving, I receive a phone call from my bank asking me about some rather large and unusual charges in the last hour. I told them that I've been at the gym working out for the last 2 hours. This was told to me by the officer filling out the report, that thieves are able to unlock Master locks, combo or key, with a "shim", and rummage through your things without you not noticing until it's too late. When I checked my wallet, sure enough, my debit card was gone and some cash. Apparently, they left my credit card and the rest of the cash so that I wouldn't notice right away. So, basically, I spent the rest of the afternoon talking to the police and my bank. Luckily, the bank covered the loss right away, but I'm out of a debit card for a week. Has this happened to anyone else? I'm thinking of joining a higher end club that has better security. The only problem is that I'd be paying 3 times the amount in monthly dues. I hope everyone else had a better day than me.

I belonged to a higher end gym for awhile..that sort of thing happened there, too.
While I don't belong to a gym now, I belong to a pool. I NEVER carry my wallet in with me and leave it secreted in the car. Sometimes I leave it at home. I only carry the swipe card that gets me in and my license.

I don't take anything in for that reason, but the buggers steal my shampoo all the time. I keep buying really lousy stuff as revenge...they still take it.

Wallet stays at home. Sue -- I don't even take shampoo. I think the locker rooms at our local high school pool are nasty so I just throw my clothes back on and go home to shower.

If I could predict such occurences, I'd start doing a Nair/Shampoo switcheroo.

I use to leave my wallet at home but then I was followed by a police officer one morning and took that as my warning sign that I should probably have my license on me. But I leave that in the car locked in my glove box.

I wouldn't find a new club...it can happen at any club. Just be glad that you have a great bank that caught all of this in time. Sorry to hear about that....it is just a sad reminder about some of the types of people we live with in this world.

I just take my swipe card, lisence and cell phone. I would leave my cell at home, but I feel naked without it. Sorry about this irritating inconvenience, that sucks.

Note: I think his shampoo would be a dead give away - If I not mistaken, he's all shiny on top! ;)

I don't go to any gym, but i do go to pool and lock my clothes in a locker, i don't take anything other then my pool card with me. Our pool seems to be pretty safe especially at 6:00am and some people leave they stuff in lockers unlocked.

It's unfortunate that we can't concentrate on training, and instead we have to worry about someone stealing our stuff.

It may not be ideal, but if you have valuables that you need to take to the gym. You can bring a small bag to put them in, and bring them with you when you work out. At least that way you know they are safe.

Guess I should empty my pockets prior to going into the Y for my lunch swim. Just never have thought about it as I am buddies with the old guys that are always hovering in the locker room minding everybodies business. Then again it is probably the old guys that are preventing thefts as most of the time one or two of them will be there when I dress and then in another part of the locker room telling literal WWII stories when I leave.

They are a trip if you have time to talk, which I never seem to do.

+1 tp the old guys. My previous YMCA had a problem with wallet and car thefts. But only if you used the main locker room that was divided into two sides with kids and teens on one and adults on the other. The older small locker room was constantly patrolled by the seniors. If a young guy took a step in there they would be in his face. If a person took out a cell phone the same thing happened.

I take nothing but my keys into my new YMCA. It is pretty much a zero crime small town but I am just too lazy to carry a padlock and then have the key with me when I swim or workout.

I'm just going to take my swipe card and put my keys on a lanyard.

Sorry to hear it.

I've had a speedo not returned to the lost and found once, but other than that my aquatic center/gym is pretty golden, for a community parks and rec. thing.

I keep my stuff in my pack and keep it with me like most do. At swim masters its like an arrivals carousal with all those bags out there poolside.
When working out I keep my towel/water bottle there and visit it frequently.
Also, I generally work out/swim during slower times so I don't see the crowds, it's almost dead there most times.

Worse thing that happens here is if you swim on weekends, you share a lane swimming with a lane hog who might slice you with their swim paddles, or kick you when they swim by in angst for having to share the lane against their will.
This happened to me today I thought, the lady left in shame after it happened so I knew she wasn't trying to assault me-she was well over on her side on her return leg to the door to leave-could've slipped the QUEEN MARY 2 between us in that lane.
(I thought this initially as we've had some women who have done this on purpose b/c someone didn't ask their personal permission to share the lane so they felt their aggression/violence was warranted) They were banned, and I here they're awaiting court for this))
