2010 "A" Race Selection

I've recently completed my final race of the year, the Timberman (it was fantastic) and I'm taking a few weeks to recuperate then I am moving on to my off season regimen. I am looking to organize my plan but it will need to be tweaked based on what races I elect to participate in. I'm definitely going to enter the Vineman 70.3 but I'm unsure of which my second race will be. I'm waffling between the Wildflower 70.3 and the California 70.3. I'm unsure of which to sign up for. The Vineman is on 7/19, the Wildflower is 5/2 and the California is 3/27.

I have trained for and raced a HIM six weeks after another (RI and Timberman this summer) but I'm unsure of how I would go about what would be almost a 4 month gap with the California. How do you deal with that from a training perspective? I'm guessing that it's not a reasonable expectation to deem both the CA and the Vineman "A" races due to time passed between?

I think you could absolutely consider both CA and Vineman 'A' because of the time between. You will have plenty of recovery time, enough time to build back up a bit, and to taper. I think doing both and comparing the two time-wise would be cool.

Time-wise it's not a concern from a recovery standpoint. Where would I pickup my training in early April? Would I start over? Would I have 2 plans for a season? One with an a slight increase than the first?

I agree, plenty to time to make both "A" races if you go Calif/Vine. Probably would shorten the base phase for the Vine, lengthen the build, and increase the intensity of the peak. You might look at Triathlete Magazine's Essential Week by Week Training Guide. It's kind of cool b/c it breaks down intensity levels from 1 ("I work 60 hrs/wk, need to spend time with my kids, lucky to squeeze 6 hours of training/week) to 10 ("I'm independently wealthy, my family has given up on seeing me entirely, and I want to podium at Kona, so 30-40 hrs of training a week isn't an issue"). You could pick one level for Calif, then take it up a notch for Vine. I wouldn't get too caught up on time comparisons b/c they are very different courses: Calif is flatter but can be pretty windy, Vine has a very fast swim course (I think it's short), but moderate hills on the bike and rolling hills on the run and it can be brutally hot (air temp close to 100 this year and the run is entirely exposed). But then aren't we always comparing one race performance to the another?

I've never run Wildflower, but I understand it's a very pretty course, but very tough.
