Question for all the 50 days of Core people
Congrats on your race!
I am just doing it so I can feel confident in a bikini....j/k, well, sort of.
I do my core work everyday. Some days more, some days less. There are definitely changes in the way I look and the way I feel on my bike and in my swim. I "feel" myself engaging my core in all my activities.
We don't have a list going per se, but occassionally people will write up the exercises they did that day, and I have picked up a few new ones here and there.
I usually do my core work after the kids have gone to bed and I am hanging out watching tv. I just get down on the floor and get 'em done.

I do it for the bikini too..............oh wait sorry wrong site, .....
Seriously, it's only my second 50 day challenge, but I am much straighter in my run and in my swim, and much less difficulty on the bike. I have lost a few kilos, I carry myself straighter which leads to less back pain, and in turn less problems after the run... I just feel so tired before and so pleased after...
I know the real benefits of excercise are supposed to be with a rest day thrown in. I don't have one. Some days I have good days, I can knock out 7 or 8 some I have to force really hard to get my 5 like today.
Lists you can get almost anywhere if you google core excercises. There are tons of videos showing how to do it right and 100's of examples... the most basic are the crunch bridge and plank, and lunge. I think everything else is a sort of variation.
Oh and I know what it is like to train for a year without doing core. There is no comparison really.

i'm not as hard core as some (so to speak)
i'm just doing 3 days of core w/ pushups on the days in between (5 days total), 20 minutes max for any day. i just do my thing before my morning shower.
but it has been beneficial and i can feel the difference in my posture both when working out and not.
obviously, the rate of improvement is not as fast as if i did 5 or 6 days of core a week
in my brief survey, one out of one wives surveyed enjoyed the results :p
you should check out vistring's before and after pics if you want to be totally sold

I have never felt better or have been able to really see my abs before doing this. My aero position on the bike is easily held. My shoulders feel discomfort before my back. If you would have told me that was possible a year ago I would have said bullsh%$. It also feels pretty cool when swimming to actually notice your abs flexing with each stroke. I also was amazed at how easily it became a habit. Knocking out 500 reps a night is not a problem. 1000 requires some effort and in the offseason I was mixing 2000 rep days each week. I never really had an issue with being over sore.
Plus we may get to see a picture of jtrimom and Warrior in a bikini one of these days ;-)

I did core work sporadically for years and never really saw any improvement. Joining the challenge held me to a new standard and after doing core work every day (most of the time only 1 or 2 pts = 100 - 200 reps), I saw amazing differences (I did Core Challenge 1,2 & 3 and now this most recent one). My back doesn't feel as tired or get sore when I go long on the run or the bike. My swim feels more powerful.
And I am 40 yrs old with four kids and I can rock a bikini. Yeah, it was worth it ; )
PS. I do a huge variety of reps b/c I get bored easily. Personally, I have found the windshield wipers (on your back, arms out for balance, legs together at 90 degrees rotating from the left to right and all the way back) and the planks (60 secs at a time, left, right, center) to have the greatest impact.
That which does not kill me makes me faster...
I think I've started one or two of the 50 days but always forget to post then forget to do them; I think it would be nice to have a sticky thread or something so that these kinds of posts don't get lost as more get posted . Also, I wanted to share an exercise that I got out of Outside a few months ago. Pushups with dumb bells: Start in pushup position up, hands holding weights. Do a pushup and stay up then, keeping your posture straight and feet together bring the right weight to you right shoulder like a row and down, repeat with the left. And do 10-15 of them. They're pretty good, I don't know how many points I'd give myself for 3 sets of 10.
I'm not trying to answer your "How many days a week?" question, as much as ask what I'm missing. Obviously a lot of people doing the core challenge do not think like me.
I'm amazed at how many people do core work every day. Some people claim that abs, calves, and forearms can be worked every day, but I'm seeing most of the information out there says to give abs the same rest that you would any other muscle. I did a Google search on "ab workout frequency" to confirm what I have heard all my life. I'd say that doing core work 60 min every other day, rather than 30 per day, is the most benefit per time spent.
My workout log will show you that I spend about 30 minutes per month on core, so I guess doing 30 minutes per day would help a lot.
30 minutes straight of core work would be tough. 60 minutes would be beyond me. I try to go for 3-4 tough workouts and 3-4 moderate per week. But a day or two of rest per week probably does make sense. But what fun is there in that :-)

ya, I am doing b/t 10-20 min a night of core- that easily gets me 5-7 points depending on what kind of torture I choose to inflict on myself ;)

If I end up looking like Vstring, I will not only put on a bikini, but will do it with jtrimom in it as well.... :-)
Both of us in the same bikini at the same time, now thats rocking the abs...... :=)

I'm with TryScott. There are so many myths out there about abs being some unique muscle set. They respond just like others. Abs benefit from rest too, even if like your heart they can be trained to do without.
I do not do thousands or even hundreds of reps but use high resistance low reps twice a week. Cable crunches, weighted lat extensions, inclined sit ups, etc. Any decent personal trainer can show exercises that will hit the core abs with high resistance that make MORE muscle. That means greater strength for explosive performance, or a greater division of load delaying fatigue. Running, swimming, biking build endurance in those new muscles.
Correct me, but I think the abs/core are special in that if they are good everything around them works, if they are not, then no matter how good what's around it, (legs arms, upper torso, ) wont be nearly as effective as with a good core.
Yes I agree with the One day off and one day on, but I still do it every day, it's a discipline, and it's helping me recover a lot. I would imagine it's also an area, that is worked, through many forms of excercise without people realising it, for me, this is just bringing attention and focus to it.
Besides, I do actually find it addictive, as the man said, a day without core is like a day without sunshine. :-) I don't have either around here ;-)

Thanks for all the feedback. Some of you have been at it for a long time now. I knew I'd get some good advice.
Now that it's nearly off season for me. I'm also going to be adding this into my weekly schedule.

I'm not sure I'll get to 20 in 6 weeks but if I'm doing 20+ by next season. I'd be thrilled.

Talk about one heck of a way to find your weaknesses. My abs were definitely sore at the end of the day. Which made me think about your "Core Program" here on Trifuel.
I'm curious what you have found to be the best for your core training.
How many days a week?
How many days a week do you hit them hard?
Or is it better just to be even and gradually build?
Has somebody compiled a list of every possible core exercise so that you have variation?
Just curious to hear what some of you may have "learned" from doing this program.
I'm sure it will pay dividends if I get into this and keep at it.
Thanks in advance
