Garmin Forerunner 310xt, how accurate in the swim?

I'm just glad that it's waterproof. My last race I wore a Timex Ironman on one wrist, then after the swim, I had to put my 405 on the other wrist...what a hassle. Just wish the 310xt was a little cheaper.

How does it work as just a time lap counter if you turn GPS off? Can you just use it well as a lap timer only?

Yes, I usually just turn off the gps, and use it to record times. Here is how the data appears in garmin connect. Normally it doesn't show all those empty columns, but I forgot to turn off the gps until after 50m.

Hello Everybody,
I finally got to do the test on 310xt accuracy when swimming. In order to maintain a steady gps signal the watch was placed in the swim cap, instead of on the wrist. The test was performed in a matching orange speedo and cap to go with the trim on the watch. No making fun of my splits, I did it at the end of a 2 mile swim, and wasn't trying to go fast at all.

Lap swimming with the watch in the cap, wasn't too great. However in this test I swam the perimeter of the recreation area 4 times. I then used gmaps pedometer to compare to the gps route.
Gmaps Pedometer logged the 4 loops as .20 Miles
Summary 00:08:54 0.28 Mi
1 00:02:03 0.07 Mi
2 00:02:08 0.06
3 00:02:20 0.07
4 00:02:23 0.08
the 310 xt logged it has .28, not accurate, but not crazy off like when you wear it on your wrist, or while in the cap doing laps. It was actually pretty comfortable in the cap, in fact I would say more so then on my wrist. I don't have the guts yet to toss it on my wrist while running to T1 after an open water swim, but if I do I'll post the route.
While it isn't accurate enough for my taste, it would be worth it for the novelty in OWS.
