What's the worst thing that has happened to you before a race.
my ex dumped me the wknd of a big race....
I had a tri-suit on and had my goggles in my back pocket. The RD was very strict on having the transition area secured and didnt allow anyone back in. While going to the bathroom I had to pull the suit off my shoulders, etc. and my goggles fell out of the back pocket and into the urinal while I proceeded to take care of the biz. Gewww.....Imagine swimming in goggles (even though I washed and soaped them very well) that you just peed in!!!!
Forgot bottle cage and my powerbar to eat on the bike before a 70.3. Luckily I had a clif bar instead (actually think it worked better) and was able to buy a cage. Not that bad in light of most people's experiences probably... knock on wood.
Wow! the worst thing that happen to me during my only race last weekend was that I forgot to put my riding gloves on. My palms were hurting!! Well good for you for still managing to get in a great time!!
There was 5 minutes before the close of transition to start the race, and I was topping off the air in my rear tire and my tube burst.
A couple of other people were near me and helped me change out the tube and refill in record time and I was able to get out of transition on time. ;-)
'Nothing to it, but to do it!'
Five years ago at a duathlon I was taking one last pee and the zipper on my one piece suit broke...so there I am with a suit open from "nave to chops" to quote 'ol Bill...GF at the time (now wife) pulled out a t-shirt which I threw on...she tightened up the back with a hair band just as the gun went off...

My helmet got run over by a car when some doofus knocked it off my bike in transition 5m before the start. I walked around yelling for an extra helmet and chasing kids on bikes up the road. Amazingly some guy had a spare close by!
Getting lost trying to get to a race. It was foggy and I only had mapquest directions - no map. There were road closures and I got totally turned around out on some county roads out in the boonies. By the time I got oriented I was an hour away (It was a 3+ hour drive) and the race was starting. So I headed home and did my own HIM.
Strange part was that when I looked at the race results, someone had raced on my chip and had a pretty awful time recorded as me.
About 4 years ago I was doing an small local race just to support a friend who was doing her first one. The swim was only 400M and it's usually my best leg, I almost drowned. Someone pulled the zipper off my wetsuit and then proceeded to crawl up and over my back. After the swim I ran to the transition area and got all my bike stuff and took off, there was about a 50M run until you could mount your bike. I was pushing my bike by the seat and the front wheel started to wobble, so instead of dragging my bike, I decided to let it fall and I would just pick it up and run again. Well that was a bad idea and I broke my derailleur hanger. I walked back to my wife with my broken bike and we went home. First and only DNF, it almost killed it for me.
Had the perfect spot at the end of the rack when I set it up saturday--race was sunday and when I got to the transition area someone had shoved my bike over to put her's on the end and in doing that she locked up my pedals and handlebars into other bike's wheels. She had all her stuff set up in enough room for three bikes- but I resisted the urge to step on her granola bar on my way out.
I had a friend offer me their mom's home the night before a race in Roswell New Mexico because she was going to be out of town. I arrive at the home to realize she has NOOOO air conditioning. Those of you not familiar with Roswell or New Mexico should know that night time in the heat of summer hovers around 89-90. I also slept on the couch because I didn't want to have to make a bed back in the morning before the race. Needless to say I barely slept and had the worst race of my life the next day.

I put my bike shoes into the clips on the wrong side at the Nation's Tri last year--an A race for me. So left was on the right and vice versa. I didn't notice this until I went to get on my bike and slip into my shoes. Had to pull off to side and get shoes on right feet. Cost me less than 30 seconds. Now I always make sure right is on right and left is on left. I also had a small crash in that race less than 5 miles from T2 and had was about to have my best bike time ever.
My first year of tri's were all bad.
Tri#1 Great swim, 5 min into the bike broken chain. Actually had a tool to pull off the broken pin, but didn't know how to use it, so fiddled with it for about 15-20 min, then finished the bike, went to tie my shoes for the run and broka a shoe lace..... Still finishe and had a good laugh. What else can you do.
2nd tri, flatted twice. still finished.
3rd tri - nothing bad for me, but it was an exterra race and a woman right in front of me wrecked on a fast downhill and broke her neck. Myself and two others stopped to help her and manage care until the paramedics arrived. Then I went and finished the race after waiting for about an hour.....
4th tri - about 4 miles from the end of an olympic bike, the handlebars came off the borrowed bike I was using. wrecked goign up hill thankfully, so it was slow. walked the bike in, and still finished.
The good part was that my second year was really easy to PR :) Knock on wood, but since then I haven't had any mechanical or other issues except cramping...
Had a big pasta meal the night before my first race...bad idea. My body refused to make refuse and i carried it with the whole race (1/2, 20,4). When I got home, I was so sick that i laid in bed for hours running back and forth to the bathroom.
I also popped a tube the night before a race, then in warm up the day of, then during the race...twice. The first time i got a ride back to transition and put in a new one...the second time i brought my pump with me and pumped it up every few miles just to finish. No one else was on the course except me and a cop in a golf cart. Needless to say i replaced my tires the next day to gatorskins..4 years later i still have not flatted those tires.
my goggles fell out of the back pocket and into the urinal while I proceeded to take care of the biz. Gewww.....Imagine swimming in goggles (even though I washed and soaped them very well) that you just peed in!!!!
ugh...yuck.At least they didn't fall into the porta potty tank, though!!! That would be pretty "crappy"...
Before a race?
Showed up to a 10k 5 minutes after the start (still caught up, though my friends kidnapped my race number and lost it at a bagel shop while I was running)
Forgot my number belt and for some reason couldn't track down safety pins to attach my number, ended up using shoelaces :-)
Jumped on the bed at a hotel the night before and kinda bruised a rib and almost dislocated my shoulder because it was so hard.
Nothing serious, though.
This was actually my husbands tri but it was HIS fault. This was for the Auburn 1/2 outside of Sacramento. I didn't make reservations at a hotel because I figured it would be easy to find a place there or at least in Sacramento. Unfortunately it was the basketball state championship and EVERY single place was booked. We ended up sleeping 4 people in our Jetta at the race site where every hour or so a train came by. In the morning he biked to the start (6 miles away)and I was going to drive since we were volunteering so I took his swim gear and the gear of the guy that parked next to us. Unfortunately when I went to start the car I realized my husband had biked off with the keys.

First posting here!
I did a race on Sunday and I had one thing after another thing go wrong during the race. While setting up my bike and filling my aero bottle the rubber band brakes that helps holds it in place. Luckily I had duct tape on hand to solve that problem. Than 1 minute before my wave goes out my goggles break while I was putting them on. I had to do the whole swim with my eyes closed only looking to spot bouys. The swim was in the ocean so my eyes burned. Luckily I can stay straight when I swim and was still in the top 6 out of the water in my age group of 32 people. I go to put my sunglasses on and my lens pops out, it was a very interesting day. Still got top 5 in my age group, so I can't be to mad =).
What are some of the crazy experiences that has happened to you guys during or before a race?
