What’s faster, tri-suit or tri-shorts?

The water temperature is warming up enough where wetsuit's aren't allowed. I’m a decent swimmer and don’t mind going without a wetsui.. I do have some chest/leg hair which the wife doesn’t want me to shave.

What’s faster, a tri-suit or just the tri-shorts?

Probably whichever is more comfortable for you for the rest of the race... it's hard to add a top when wet, so that would probably be your biggest time loss if you swim topless and then try to put one on.

Although if it is a poorly fitting trisuit, or a badly designed one (in terms of neckline and pockets) you could face a lot of drag.

It depends. I have a really nice 2XU trisuit (something like $300) that's very fast in the water (faster than just a speedo). I also have cheapie Zoot trisuit (something like $70) that feels like dragging a wet t-shirt through the water. Tri shorts will also be also faster or slower depending on their material and how they fit. Does either choice have pockets? Those are like little parachutes. Also, unless you have a Brillo pad for chest hair, it should be laying down against your skin in the water and won't really slow you down.

Don't forget the rest of the race after the swim. I don't fare well with heat, so having the extra material over my body during the run will slow me down if it's over about 70 degrees. In races where it's allowed, I'll generally opt to go with just shorts.

Are you male or female? Strike that. It doesn't matter - go with the shorts, you'll be super fasterer.

i like shorts/top. but all my pre-race jitters occur in my colon, and its easier to pull down shorts in a portojohn.

Just stumbled across this post, does anyone have any recommendations/reviews towards the 2xu elite tri suit? Its not the super-elite.

Also the whole slicker in the water thing? Lets face it, swimming is the typical triathletes worst sport, what kind of time could one gain with a good tri suit?

I have a 2XU super elite and it's probably worth about 2sec/100m. For an Olympic distance race you're talking about the difference between swimming 18:00 and making a bike pack and swimming 18:30 and being off the back. Is the difference between 29:00 and 29:30 as big as 18:00 and 18:30? Probably not. Nothing's magic.

I don't know anything about the 2XU elite. I feel like I burn up on the run in the super elite, though, but I'm terrible at running in the heat anyway and I know a few guys who have the super elite as well and do fine.
