Standard Times
Well, the record is probably based on something like this:
5k - 16:18 (5:15 min/mile)
20k - 28:40 (26 mi/hr)
5k - 17:05 (5:30 min/mile)
That would leave about 2:38 for transition.
If you ran 8 minute mile pace, then averaged 20 miles per hour on the bike, then finished with 8:30 mile pace, that would put you as follows:
24:50
37:16
26:24
Total: 1:28:30
Add some time for transitions, and that would put you around 1:30:00, which is pretty decent.
What would be a bad time?
A bad time does not exist! As long as you gave it everything you have, what does it matter!
Work Hard, Play Hard, Laugh Hard!
It would matter if I got beat by most of the field.
I agree with Mamps...
The only person you are really racing is yourself.
Of course, I seem to forget this when I toe the Starting Line.....
Well into the Taper for the Flying Pig Marathon, and Yes I'm feeling Cranky.

A roadie turning tri-geek ... I like it!! Couple things to think about.
1. Don't worry too much about your time in your first race. I know that is ALL you will think about but if you don't pay attention to the race you will not want to come back for more. Dus and Tri are Very different than Crits and Cyclocross. More fun in my opinion
2. IMHO, shorter races favor cyclists more than runners so play to your strentgh.
3. Be sure to get some brick workouts in before the race. If your legs are not use to running after the bike your quads may lock up on the 2nd run.
Let us know how it goes ...
I am not really turning tri-geek (I can barely swim, maybe dau-geek), I got on a duathlon team at the gym I go to over the winter. This is the first race, and there are no road bike races that weekend, so away I go. I am fairly sure my legs will be shaken or stunned after the bike for the second run. My two runs will be slow, and maybe even run-walks. I will try to find someone to run with. With only a 20k bike part, that will be a drag race for me, but the running is what might do me in.
Why don't you try just doing a 5k by itself so you can get an idea of what pace to shoot for in the duathlon?

I will be doing my first duathlon (5k Run, 20k bike, 5k Run), with a website course description of: “the course boasts a lightning fast, flat, smooth bike course and cross-country type run course, men’s record time: 1:04:40. I have raced road bikes for three years now; I am category four in road. What would be a reasonable time in this type of event for a twenty-nine year old man doing his first multisport event of any kind?
