All,

Just finished my first tri today and I am pumped so I have to tell someone (or a buch of someones).

For starters, it was a cool morning at 40 degrees. The water was 62 degrees which was nice. What was not nice was the waves smacking me in the face on the way to the first turn. Amazing how you can start doubting yourself when you are taking on water and cannot get into a rhythm. After the first 250m, the waves were more manageable and I got into a great Total Immersion glide...except that I should have been looking where I was going. I pummelled a couple people (are you suppose to say "I sorry"?) and ended up a little outside the last bouy towards the end.

I was winded coming out of the water and struggled to get my wetsuit off. (So that is what the body glide is for...) I had practiced a lot with my bike shoes on the pedals and that paid off. I started with wave two so I ended up passing a lot of people during the bike portion. I averaged 18.5mph. My goal was 20mph. I definately need to work on my bike skills.

I started by saying it was cold. Well, when I got off the bike, I could feel that something was attached to my ankle but that is about it. The run was painful but I gutted it out and picked up a lot of steam toward the last 1/2 mile.

I finished 1hr 34min and placed 24th overall. I feel like I had a great first race and more importantly I now know where to concentrate on saving time. Now, I am moving to CA and will start training for Olympic distances.

Thanks everyone for all the great tips to get me to my first tri and to finish with a decent time.

That's awesome! Your first tri and you placed 24th overall. That is damn'd impressive! At least in Cali it will be warmer and you'll be able to feel more than the chip on your ankle. :) You can also start practicing some bricks to help with the bike to run transition for your muscles if you weren't doing those already.

Anyhow, nice job! You're officially hooked.

Toni,

Thanks for the reply. I needed a fellow triathalete to say good job. All of my friends and family kind of get a far away look in their eyes when I start talking about tri stuff. It is the "That's nice dear, now go and play with your bike" attitude. :-) There are so many misconceptions about triathlons. My wife kept telling friends that I was doing a "mini-triathlon"! It did not feel mini when I was about to loose my breakfast at the finish line!

Yeah, my parents are the same way. They don't ask any questions about it since they don't know what to ask. My mom finally stopped insisting that I shouldn't do them because they might interfere with school. But most of my friends know what they are and are getting into them.

You should make them come with you to a race to cheer you on so they can see just what it is you're obsessed about. Then they'll have more respect for your "hobby". Try to get your wife into it as well. Then you'll have a training partner in the house. Maybe take her to the nearest Ironman race and give her a taste of the "show". It's amazing and inspiring and scary all at once.

Anyhow, you've got about 3,000 of us here to talk to all you want about Tri stuff. You can type til your fingers are blistered. :)

When is your next race?

Toni,

I signed up for the Pacific Beach Olympic distance in Sept and I will probably sign up for the Treasure Island Olympic that goes in October I think. If I can catch some sprints along the way, I will. After that I will take a month of lower intensity training and then gear up for the Big Sur Marathon in April. There are a lot of triathlons in the area I am moving so I will figure out the rest of the details when I get there. What is your race plan for the season?

I plan on dropping 5 lbs over the next couple of months and another 5 lbs before the Oct event. I am a hefty 199 lbs right now which is good for some sports but not for this one. The Zone meal plan looks reasonable so I may try that to loose the weight. I have experienced a dramatic increase in my 5K time when I have dropped a few pounds. I am sure it will help with the bike portion as well.

Where in CA are you moving to? Sounds like you might be near my area (Orange County)...

Congrats on the first tri! And yes, it is hard when other people just don't get it. I think it's one of those things that you need to experience (as a participant, but sometimes even just as a volunteer).

It is annoying sometimes when people think all tris must be Ironman distance or they aren't "real".

I'm curious on some swim etiquette stuff as well... I'm going to make a post on it in the swim section to see what others think.

Nice job David! Keep moving and training. Just watch out for that all consuming feeling. Triathlon racing/training is a great way to stay sane, and loose it all at the same time :D Have fun!

David-

Congrats on your first tri! Awesome time - I know you're pumped! Don't worry about the non-triathletes out there, sometimes I wonder if they'll ever "get it". Luckily, I have a group of friends that race and are very athletic and we support each other (just like the trifuel folks :) ). After all these years my mom still thinks it's a phase that I'll grow out of - a nice italian girl should be home sewing curtains and making meatballs not riding a bike ;) .

I am moving a little further north of you to Monterey. I may make it down your way for a tri or two. I want to make a lot of progress in the next 18 months so I sure I will be traveling.

How do I convince my wife that I need to take my bike and trainer on the trip across the country so I do not loose what I have gained????

Take your bike and trainer as you move out here?
Tell her that if without them for long amounts of time you will find yourself compulsively telling (and retelling) the story of your first tri the whooooole trip ;-)

I love Kyillee's idea about taking the bike and trainer across or you'll talk about your first tri the whole time. :) Anyhow, sounds like a good plan for your summer. I'm hoping to do Big Sur one day. I signed up for it years ago and then wasn't able to go. :( One day . . .

This summer I plan on doing a 200 mi bike ride, a couple of sprints and if I'm lucky, an olympic. We'll see how everything goes.

Good luck with the move!

Well, if two women say it, it must be a good plan. Always trust a woman's intuition and never refuse their advice. You will never live it down!

Thanks to the two of you for the encouragement and marriage advice!
