first sprint

Well the day finally came and I was psyched! I got up before the alarm and got my stuff ready to go.Had a half hour ride to the venue. The weather was perfect and my friend and I (she was also a tri-newbie)got there with plenty of time to spare. I got her tires pumped up and helped her set up her transition area, and went to put air in my tires. In my excitement I basically pulled the stem off the front tire. So, the time that I was going to spend warming up, was spent changing a flat....That got me a little flustered, as I really wanted everything all laid out well.
Went to the start and looked out at the water and am floored at the distances laid out before me. I had been training for weeks at my little pond, had the distances gps'ed and had it down to the foot. I am looking at this course, hearing the people around me saying, "wow that looks long to me!" and I am thinking "NO @#$!" So with the flat and this extra long swim in front of me I am more than a little squirrely, and then they start letting the waves go. Men, women, teams, and then the novices. As I've posted, the crawl is still escaping me, and I know that I am going to be slow, but it takes me 31 minutes to get out of the water.
I still feel pretty good physically, and I am ready for the bike, so I get out their and am steaming by a bunch of people on the bike, make it with about a 16.5 mph average. The bike was just fun, and I really wanted to go faster, but a big hill at the end and the longer swim, just took some of the speed off me.
So I got in and out of t2 in a minute thirty.Felt really good on the run, just went out and ran my own time, which I know isn't fast at 38 minutes for 3.6 miles. I could have pushed harder on the run and looking back on it now, I am pounding on myself for not pushing, but I was really out there to celebrate all the progress I've made.
And here's what I learned this weekend.
1.Triathlon is freakin cool, all the disciplines, race day, the competitors. Everything about is nice and I didn't see anything real cutthroat. Anyone would talk to you, whether they had high end ultra tech equipment or a tenspeed off the back porch.
2. I need to learn to crawl, and get better in the water. part of my problem on the swim was the distance thing, but I am still not super comfortable.
3. I need to do a bunch of speed work. Swim, run especially, but need to do some speed work to get me moving faster.

Well, I got a bunch of stuff out of this experience and am happier, healthier, and lighter than I've been in a bunch of years. I have lost better than 40 pounds in two years, I lost 8 percent body fat since January alone. I lost 3 inches off my waist. I don't need a nap in the middle of the day. And my total cholesterol isn't 300 anymore. And yes I may have finished near the end of the pack for the men, but that is this time. Next time will be an entirely different story. Thanks to the community here, I made it through my training and my first tri without getting hurt and a smile on my face. I am a triathlete.

great job!! I just did my first sprint last weekend. It's pretty awesome huh?

Believe that you can run farther or faster. Believe that you're young enough, old enough, strong enough, and so on to accomplish everything you want to do. Don't let worn out beliefs stop you from moving beyond yourself.

Congrats on you first sprint! Sounds like you got the bug now! And hey...you have your first flat on race day out of the way, which while frustrating...you overcame it successfully!

That's what unique about the swim: You can usually see the entire thing and no matter the distance, it looks far. Next time, when you get to shore, don't look up (sorta like if you were afraid of heights, the advice would be, "Don't look down). Just glance up and think, "Ok, the buoys are that-a-way." Then turn around.

Also, what you overheard is EXACTLY why I dislike going to pasta dinners and staying at the race hotel. Odds are it was some jerk like me totally saying that on purpose just to freak you out! ("OMG, it is so hot. Can't you just feel how hot it's going to get?" "I heard they don't have enough volunteers to man aid stations, so no aid stations today." "Did you see that hill out there? Man, that's a lot of climbing." "That swim is so far. It looks farther than it should be. I should know, I've seen a few swims in my time." "Your tire looks low. You might want to stop and check it.")

What is this "crawl"? Is it something other than freestyle?

actually, if you sink, you're still allowed to crawl along the bottom...just like on the run! :)

congrats to the OP on your race and successes this year!

way to go on your first one ! anf yes, triathlon is awesome, and i've been consistently amazed at how kind the majority of other athletes are at the races.

and as far as the swim looking long, yep, that always seems to happen. Maybe we should try wearing non-transparent goggles. The water is usually murky, anyway, lol.

Congrats!

But we should warn you: keep training hard, and you'll be back to needing that nap in the middle of the day. :)

great day relis12, no matter how how much you plan race day is all about what's thrown at you and how you recover and go on-- flat no problem!

Yeah, that swim does always look long; 1st, 2nd, 10th time no matter the distance it's the start to the race.

Congrats on the day, TRIAHTLETE... freakin cool!!!
