brake issue

Oh yes, that is very not good- if the pad is scraping along the rim it slows you down! You can manually adjust the brake by moving it back and forth (side to side) with your hands, its kinda hard to explain, but just try it, take it in to a shop, or look up online for a diagram.

As I am totally new and trying to learn more about all the fun little parts of my bike, i noticed that on the rear brake pads, one of the pads is slightly touching the rim. I just took my bike in for a total tuneup....as I have my first sprint race tomorrow is this something that I should try and fix or take it to the experts? many thanks to all of you who give such great adivse to us newbies :)
