Here's a link to a bunch of pics I took. Some swim start and a bunch from the bike, battery died though as the run was starting and I forgot my backup in the car and was not about to walk all the way back to get it.

Pre-race:
Rode the course Friday. Beautiful, much easier than IMWI which I've done twice, at least in my opinion. Unfortunately there were quite a few locals that made it clear that they did not appreciate us out riding, despite riding as far right as we could and single file. I was honked at, yelled at and flipped off more in one 56 mile ride then in all my rides added up the last 3 years. Swam 1 loop saturday, nice swim.

Race morning: Up at 5 am to help our friends that were doing the race get going. At the swim start and soaked by 7. Watched most of the swim start then walked out to the bike course. Picked a good spot at the base of the first little climb in town right after the downhill section out of T-1. Sat for an hour taking pictures and watching riders heading up the small hill. Got to witness first hand the spectacular bike handling of triathletes! Could not believe some of the stuff we saw, especially in the later groups. Lots of people riding slow, messing around (eating, putting on jackets etc...) while riding in the far left as they went up the hill. This caused riders that were absolutely sprinting up the hill to have to pass them on the right or go over the yellow line. Lots of people messing around with food/clothing weaving all over the roads too while being passed. Pretty entertaining and scary for a while.

Switched to the top of the hill coming into the 'hot corner' (90 degree turn right at the expo tents to go around transition) as riders came in from their first loop. Lots of scary stuff again. Could not figure out why a ton of people were trying to eat while coming through this section until later on when I realized special needs was right before that part of the course. Lots of crowd support for the riders coming through.

Took a break, got some lunch, then watched the run start at the top of the hill coming out of T-2. Both mens' and womens' leaders had huge leads. Lots of support again for the runners.

Headed out to our aid station on the run course at the boathouse out and back. Worked it from 6-10pm. Lots of fun, but I also never want to see orange gatoraide again. The later it went into the night the more appreciative the runners were. Some people smiled and looked like they were having the time of their lives, others looked like walking death. Oh, I also did not know that they recycled the sponges. After seeing people stuff them in all kind of 'unmentionalble' places then toss them out to be re-soaked and then re-used, I don't know if I can ever take a sponge again at an M-dot race.

Left our aid station at 10, walked down to the finish for an hour or so then headed back to our beds exhausted. Got up and headed to the volunteer registration line about 7am, sat in line for about 3+ hours until we finally got signed up for 2010. Began the 8 hour drive home then heard that our friends that stayed home and risked not getting in had no problem registering on line for 2010. Oh well!

Thanks so much for your volunteering! You were at the boat house? Meet Beads? Caymen?
Sorry for your having trouble with the locals. It's a real problem and is probably why the town only signed a three year contract with WTC instead of the usual 5. Notice all the blue signs on the road posted by Placid Planet bikes asking training triathletes to be respectful of the locals? Many locals have had it with the, and I quote, "Elitist and entitled attitudes of triathletes." (The local newspaper) While most of us would never do anything to piss off the home town folks...many triathletes do. Visit there during other times of the year, as I do, don't wear tri related stuff and you'll get an ear full about "those f'ing triathletes." They would rather have hockey and rugby players. I have heard from a good lead, local, volunteer source that one of the reasons they coupled registration with volunteering was because local folks are tired of the attitude and stopped volunteering in droves.
We really only have ourselves to blame.
I'm planning on writing a blog entry later on some of the insanity I saw on the course, like you did, that leads me to believe many of the folks doing the race are in WAY over their heads.
I'm not surprised that there were slots left for online...I called this months ago with the bad economy and the inability of folks to use their houses as an ATM.
Again...thanks for coming out and see ya there next year. I'll be at the boat house.

Cool Pix,

I probably saw you at the Boathouse.
Cayman and I were there from 12 pm to after 12 am after clean up.

I was wearing the floppy boonie-type hat to keep the sun off me.

They were running out of sponges by 6pm.
The recycled sponge thing was kind of disgusting, so I am packing my own wet sponges in a ziplock next year.

You missed the last couple of finishers coming thru close to midnight.
The drama!!

Beads....
I think I remember you walking around in that hat. I was working mostly at the next to last table (as the runners came out) pouring gatoraide and ice cups, then spent the last hour or so out on the yellow line handing out ice to runners coming back.

We had a goofy shift, 6-10 pm. We were supposed to be at the river road aid station from 12-4 but they moved us last minute, then they messed up and did not realize we had requested an early shift in order to be done early but it all worked out.

Nice pics!

I volunteered at Special Needs Bike from 9am-2pm. SO glad I did. All of the athletes were SO grateful and fun to be around. It's obviously a nice perk being able to register first on Monday before non-volunteers, but I can say without a doubt that I will be volunteering again either at IMLP or another race just because I enjoyed it so much.

The whole Special Needs Bike station freaked me out a little, because I feel like people were coming in WAY too fast and not doing a good job of getting out of the middle of the road once they stopped. Fortunately there were no accidents/collisions, other than a couple of people falling off of their bikes at slow speeds. I am definitely going to steal some ideas to use in my own special needs bag next year.

Anton I definitely saw you on the run and cheered for you. I assume you were finishing your first loop. Despite your foot problems, you obviously looked like someone that deserved to be there! :) Congrats to any and all finishers! Enjoy the recovery!

IMLP 2010 will be my first full IM. Can't wait!

Hey KK, we keep missing each other, 2 yrs ago at IMWI on the other side of the tables also. I think we were probably a few feet from each other at the boathouse aid station, orange VTech hat, orange shirt and orange gatorade. Agree, I never want to see orange gatorade again!

Great pics.

I have to comment on the riders as I was making my way slowly up Rte 73 to LP Saturday morning. Bikers 2-3 across and in groups were selfishly hogging the lanes oblivious to traffic and the posted signs of "share the road". This was without a doubt the elitist, we're more important than you attitude that the locals must be so tired of enduring. I had a few select comments to shout out the window myself as I was driving along.

Saturday night Sunday morning walking back to the car a mile or so from the station beads and I were yelled at by a carload of passing teens and it wasn't a happy, hi howdy, how ya doin? The next morning on our way out of town after signing up for 2010 we passed a car with a coupla bikes racked on back, obvious racers from the day before, the troopers lights blaring on this guys butt. My conclusion, okay the weekend's over, you've spent your money, we've put up with your bs, now it's our turn.

This race may go away in 3 years because the locals seem to be fed up, can't say as I blame them.
Don't sh!t in your own backyard, it's important to be respectful of the communities we race in.

Sorry for the rant.

And yeah, I think I'll pass on the sponges next year no matter how hot it is.

Cayman,
Yeah, 2 years ago at IMWI I was on my way to the Saturday TF meetup when I noticed a huge gash in my tire and had to head to the expo to get a new one to replace it.

If you were anywhere near the end of the aid station (as the runners were coming out) you and I were real close. I was there with an older guy that was handing out water. I was the one that kept sneaking across the line to steal cookies later on in the evening. I would tell you I had an orange IRON TEAM shirt on, but so did everyone :) I spent the first 2+ hours behind the tables filling up the gatorade and ice and then the last hour or so on the yellow line giving out ice as runners came back into town.

As for athletes in LP, I had heard going in there were tensions. About 6 of us did a group ride around the course Saturday and we did our best to ride single file, on or as close to the berm as we could etc...and still got honked at and flipped off constantly. I clearly got the impression the townsfolk were going out of their way to let us know we were not welcome, which is a shame that a few are ruining it for most of us that do behave.

We will def have to plan a meet-up next year at IMLP for the race.

KK

Fixed link

The comments section is a bit disturbing... I mean what's up with this?

Quote:
Patrick - thank you for your kind apology for your collegues. However, I still plan to pelt you with a number of condiments come race day. Please remember to duck and bring some moist towelettes. Best of luck

Lovely. :P

Good for Patrick! He coached me and my husband for a few years until we parted ways (primarily due to issues with his business partner). But he's a good guy and a class act.

Thanks for sharing, Anton!

I read it and added my .02 to the site

here it is

It is sad that there was a reason to write an apology letter. I am a triathlete and I have family that has a house in Lake Placid, and I have spent time in the area in other times of the year. Unfortunately it is not just the triathletes that are the only contributors to these problems. As previously posted it is many groups that are visiting, and of those it is just a few disrespectful people. I spent over 12 hours on race day this past weekend volunteering to assist the triathletes on course. Most of that time I spent walking back and forth beyond our aide station cleaning up trash with other volunteers. I can speak for over a hundred volunteers at our aide station that we respected the area we were in by cleaning up after ourselves and others. Some of us did this so we could have the privilege of competing in the event next year.

Folks...I just have to say this. Scott busted his ass on Sunday to help make sure everything went well at his aid station. The Station Captains couldn't say enough good things about him. In fact, that station received the Cleanest Aid Station award at the Tuesday Night Volunteer banquet. He and others walked with folks and ran in the last competitor...a new tradition we will continue next year when I'm there.

I am sure that there are locals that hate hockey players and think the figure skaters are worthless and I know there are folks who hate the two weeks every summer when the horse show people come to town.
We can't do anything about that...but we can police ourselves and help bring some love back into the community by doing all we can to be respectful and appreciative of such a fine home those folks have built.
I wrote about this problem on this site two years ago:
http://www.trifuel.com/node/8939
I've noticed some improvement...no paint on the roads less garbage by the way side when I went up to train early...but obviously we still have a long way to go.

Just to bring this back to the positive side a bit, IMWI is a completely different animal. Towns people come out and support the riders often crowding the lane at aid stations and special needs, more like TdF, mucho cowbell.

The run is also well supported thru the campus and you're just as likely to get handed a weiss beer and jello shot as gatorade. One of the runners I heard tell of had a special treat of a wet t-shirt line and the showing of the guard. Sure would have picked up my run.

Sorry to hijack your thread KK.
