Anyone with experience with beach swims...do the planners take tides and currents and such into consideration when planning a race?

I've been spending a lot of time at the beach and find that I can go for 20 minutes and get NO WHERE swimming against the current...and of course, when I turn around...speed demon! Anyway, I am concerned that swimming up current could be a serious issue.

Are race courses generally planned around the current? I know my course will be out, down one way, and back in.

Thanks for comments.

The site has changed, but I think the old XTERRA Vashon site mentioned that the course was designed to have the current at your back - but my memory could be off.

XTERRA West Cup was one direction and it seemed that the waves were at my back for a good portion of the race, so it may have been a consideration.

I am no meteorologist but I believe weather has a lot to do with how strong a current will be so it would be hard to tell what the current will be like on any given day (in reference to race planning). And any body of water could have some type of current unless you luck out and get absolutely still water! I'm sure someone knows better than me. I live in So Cal and you never know what you will get. From what I heard, one year it was so bad at IMCDA that race officials gave participants a choice to do just do the bike and run. The race I am doing is Vineman, in a river, part is upstream but from what I've heard, the currrent is barely noticeable. I specifically chose Vineman because it's typically an easy swim.

What race are you doing? Have you read previous race reports? They are great sources to get an idea of what to expect from your particular event.

Good ideas...I checked and there are results but no reports. I guess I'll see what happens.
