Race Photos - RANT
Sounds pretty on par. I have purchased ONE picture in the last 20 yrs of racing. Which is probably why they charge so much..ahahahahah
call the photo company and negotiate price. it has worked for me in the past.
That's about right. Check out the prices at ASI photos (http://www.asiorders.com/) and Brightroom (www.brightroom.com/).
fortunately, I'm not photogenic and I've never purchased race photos.
I'd buy 3 times as many if they were half the cost.
I think they'll eventually figure out that a few bucks for the full res digital file (including all rights) is what people want ... and then they'll sell a lot more. Until then most of us won't buy anything from them. They seem to still be operating on an outdated business model that requires them to cover large film developing and printing costs.
I have seen photographers at kids sporting events that are pretty close to having this figured out ... $15 - $30 for a CD that has 5-10 images.
+1 to negotiating... we negotiated a bit and were able to get the high res digital pics for a pretty fair price.
the problem I run into is a poor photo selection - a handful of times I've finished races with zero pictures

I hope they read this thread. I would buy 3 times more if they were a 1/3 of the price. In 5 years of racing I have bought one, and only because it was an amazing shot on T1. The other shots have been terrible and not worth the price. I wish they would geo tag those photos too. They charge way too much, although it would be nicer to have somebody there who would take free photos and cheer you on.

In which case they would be no better off after doing 3x the work, no? :)

The vast majority of their work has already been done. They only do more work if they sell more hard copy prints ... and that has to be pretty minimal compared to taking the photos, tagging them, and getting them up on their website. If they drop the price for their digital files, then they don't have to do any more work.

Exactly. The taking of the photos, tagging, etc. is a sunk cost to them. The point I was trying to make was, there isn't much incentive to drop the price if they end up in the same place from a $ standpoint. I agree the prints are way overpriced; I have never purchased any due to the cost.
Just thought Id throw this into the mix.
I did a race in Springfield IL today and we were informed that allll race pictures taken by there photography team could be downloaded free of charge!

I'm with you there. My friend was racing the Uberman yesterday, so I put myself into photographer mode.

Oh. Also if you are ever wondering if someone like me has been out there taking pictures that might be available on flickr. Check this site out.

TriPicture find
Are those your pics? Those are very good. And BTW, whose legs are those (you know which pic I'm talking about) and who is the bike fabricator? Is that a hand-made ti frame . . . droooooool.
The default search is the most recent 500 triathlon tagged photos. So mine have been bumped off that search.
To find my pictures on that site. You would have to search uberman.
The pictures look really sharp on that site. They look less sharp on flickr.
If you click on a picture, it will take you to that persons Flickr account so you can see the descriptions of the photos (if any).

Thanks for the compliments regarding my pictures. It's a fun hobby that makes being a triathlon spectator a bit more aerobic.
I keep thinking I'll actually catch a trifueler at one of the events but that hasn't panned out yet.
I'm racing the Timberman 70.3 next. Then a couple local races. Buckman and Skylands.
Maybe I'll catch someone at those.
