I competed in a sprint this past sunday. I had a pretty good race finishing 11th in my age group and 79th overall (out of 304). I was ok in the water but great on the bike. I averaged 23.1 mph which is by far a PR in a race for me. Better than my last race by 2mph. My run was only meh, pacing around 8:30 miles. A 13 year old kid kicked my butt on the run and even beat me in a sprint at the end. Overall not a bad race. So today I'm checking the race pictures and what do I see? Is there a picture of me ripping up the bike course? No. Is there one of me climbing out of the water, happy that my body wasn't lost at the bottom of a deep quarry? No. The only picture is of me getting squeaked out at the finish line by the little kid.

Finish Line

I'm going to punch the next race photographer I see.

Yes he killed me on the run, he even beat me in the swim. But I took that little kid to town on the bike and ended up beating him by about 45 seconds overall! Little Brat! You probably will have won at Kona 6 times by the time you are my age but I beat you today and thats all that matters. I swear the race photographers just wait for me to fail then start snapping photos. B@stards!

"Why didn't I think of that?" Your subject is brilliant. Everyone has stories of either horrible finish photos or cherishes the good ones they have. So, kudos for the great talking point. And I don't think the pics is bad at all. It's a great action shot. You're obviously going all out, but you've got a smile. You're clearly FOP because there are people still heading out in the background. The couple in between the two of you is watching like, "Dude's movin'." I bet the photog thought you were father/son. When I first saw it, I thought since the kid doesn't have a number, that he just jumped in from the chute and is running with you. Regardless, he's half your size. How could you let him out sprint you? At least push him down or something (kidding). On a side note, the sprint to the finish is all about sneaking up on them and making one, definitive quick move when they don't expect it and don't have enough distance to make up the gap.

The race photog should, however, get the finish arch (?) in the frame, with preferably a banner with the race name and the clock. Otherwise shots framed such as your could be you and some kid running through the park. I think your thread could be a starting point for discussions about 1) what makes a good race photo or finish photo, and/or 2) how to make sure you look good in the race photos.

Those race photographers are just out to get us.

In a sprint in July, I was attacked by a race photographer as I was comming out of the water. You could use the word "paparazzi". She took at least 10 fast shots of me, and posted them on the race website afterwards. Even though it took me maybe 5 seconds to get out of the water, there were so many pictures of this moment it gave the impresstion that it took me 10 minutes stand up, get my footing, and haul myself out. I looked like a bear who couldn't swim.

Your picture is actually pretty cool, you look like you're just having the best time, and that kids looks like he is flying.

Not all race photographers are so bad. This one deserves a tip for capturing my swim entrance in a recent sprint.

That kid almost looks photoshoped in.
But your post definitely captures the inevitable dissapointment of checking out the photos expecting hero shots and getting a cold dose of reality! (That goes for just about any sport...)
If anybody has tips for looking good in race photos i'd love to hear them. My last race had two different photographers and each one got good shots of me making goonie faces.

...between the two of them there's about four shots of me taking the top of my wetsuit off with that face. Maybe they knew somehow I wan't gonna buy any photos so they just had fun with it.

When that 13-yr old kid wins the Tour de France someday, you are going to be soooo proud of that picture.

You shoulda got his autograph.

Thats a great photo! I want to hire that guy to follow me around during my next race.

I don't really dislike my photo but the fact that it's the only one of me during the entire race kind of sucks. I was hoping for a decent shot on the bike but I guess I'll have to keep on hoping (and racing).

Lets see some more pictures.

Whoa, the kid's flyin', both feet off the ground.

That's actually a perfect running shot -- of the kid;) Look at the grimace on his face, the determination. He's digging it out for all he's got. Yeah, you should have tripped him.

You know, that could be one of those shots that ends up on the sites race day photos.

That reminds me of a perfect 1970s sitcom freeze frame ending. You know, like on Magnum PI or Simon & Simon or The A-Team where there's a final gag at the end of the episode and then they freeze frame on the protagonists running off or high-fiving or getting pies in the face.

The kid will someday have a shot like Whitfield finishing HyVee if that's any indication! Kids just don't feel pain. We had an 11yo runner here who kept kicking my ass all over town for a couple of years. He stopped racing when he was sixteen and cars were more fun. We have a 13yo in our running club who matches me stride for stride all the time, but he can't seem to beat his dad which is bugging him! Personally, though losing sucks, I love seeing kids fight it out and if I were you in that shot I would have that pic up in my classroom to show my kids that it's do-able! Great discussion! My partner is my photog at races and the rule is that she must take pics that make me look like a skinny b$#@^. It sometimes works...

that's a great pic! it looks like you are just having a ball and the kid is working hard to kick your butt. Whenever I send my race pics to my brothers, they say I look constipated in all of them.

I have a good one of the time I came out of the water and for some reason thought it woul dbe a good idea to remove my swim cap by pulling from the top...it worked, eventually. Its a funny picture, but not worth the money to buy it.
If you have the time, go to this link then click on Men's Swimming under Lost & Found... 2nd page, far left picture in second to last row.

I did one too with GaryTimTim. I took him out of the beach shot and put him in front of f1oored. It's confusing why someone would be running to finish a race still wearing his wetsuit.

Ditto all on how happy you look finishing the race. Ignore the punk kid.

Pictures are blocked at work and I finally got to see the picture in question. I say Classic! You have the rest of your tri career to have pics of you SBR'ing. Print it out and place it on the wall, your friends/guests should get a good kick out of it and its a good conversation starter. Better yet, come up with a good story about how you battled this elite athlete for the whole race only to be beaten at the line, then pull the pic out to show them your competition :)

Thats some real nice work. I look very happy to be running alone. I think the goofy grin looks out of place without the kid next to me. Maybe I don't need a good photographer, I just need to take a photoshop class.

So I just pick someone who looks tough and photoshop my face onto their body????

I think I can do that. My race photos are about to improve!

finish 3
I'm looking pretty hardcore now!!!
