hey guys!
My first tri(olympic) is in a week and 2 days and I do not know what to race in. Has anyone raced in running shorts or should i go buy a pair of spandex? What do you guys usually wear? Thanks any help would be appreciated.

If Christri25 had his way everyone would be racing in red thongs :D

I would get a pair of tri shorts (pearl izumi are my favorite). You can use them for the swim, bike and run and your back end will thank you after the bike ride for wearing them.

I had to do that for Christri! Really though like DSmith said a pair of Tri shorts is the best option. Pearl Izumis are good, DeSoto are good, they have a small chamois in them for the bike but it is small enough to not affect you on your swim or run. They also help speed up transition times by not having to change clothes. You can find tops to go with them also. Some people wear the tops during the swim others put them on in T1. If you are wearing a wetsuit they fit nicely under the wetsuit so you just strip the suit and off on the bike you go. Hope this helps and good luck!

I've gone shirtless in the races I've done. I will do everything in bike shorts and ride/run with no shirt on. It saves time with trying to put a shirt on and I find a shirt unecessary. Especially if your not going to be out in the sun for too long. (Anything Olympic or shorter is no shirt worthy for me). It is a great feeling to ride with no shirt on especially early in the morning. I have that I don't notice the cold because I'm more focused on the race. I woul give it a try if the race you are doing doesn't have any rules against going shirtless.

Well now I know where the red thong references came from.... Only now did I look to see if anyone had asked this question before and I find a popular thread in the newbie Forum, complete with pictures of tri-suits and everything. Sorry for repeating a newbie question. Thanks for all the advice and ideas. You guys are great!

That is one of the greatest things about this forum. Although we will joke with each other every now and then this forum is a great place to converse with others throughout the country who have the very same interest!! I have thanked Tribro before for this and I will thank him again. Where else can so many people get together and share their opinions and thoughts not only about Triathlon but anything really! Keep asking questions, like a great teacher once told me "the only dumb question is the one you don't ask!"

Geo, you're my hero. As much as I don't like seeing a man wearing briefs, I have to respect a man who puts freedom over looks.

dutchman, you know what they say, if looks could kill(it would've been us instead of him).
the incredible tanline from my bike shorts only makes it better. or blinding.

Senor Todd,
for short races Olympic distance or less, I save time in T1 by riding in my speedo tri-briefs (they have a nice chamois) but I must slip on a pair of spandex bikeshort length shorts over the briefs to run or I get terrible chafing (big thighs, you know?) I can just slip them on beside my bike and I'm away to run.

For Ironman, I change from swimsuit to bike shorts and then to my running shorts at T2. Comfort is worth more than a couple minutes at IM.

All the races I've done required men to wear tops.

For Olympic or Sprint distance, make sure you don't have to do any clothing changes in T1 or T2.
I like an "underarmor" style skin tight top and then some 8 inch inseam spandex shorts with NO
pad. I place a small pad onto my racing saddle, (the Quintana Roo "Mr. Flitie"), so I don't need padded cycling shorts for only a 24 mile bike ride, plus swimming and running are easier
without the "diaper" effect. Wear the thinnest (nylon) ankle socks you can find for the run, and
use speed laces on your running shoes. I also like to run in a visor, it allows the top of your head to get air, and ice water, yet functions as a sweat band and a sun blocker to the face.
Also might want to apply A & D ointment, or "Bag Balm" to the area where your rear end contacts the bike seat.
