related to today's post on tri marketing, i was in a bike store to pick up the packet for this weekend's race, and i asked about the new shiv. they said that the bike would be . . . $10,000 for the frame alone, be available in only 3 sizes (based on cancellera's dimensions), and be non adjustable in terms of stem, bars . . . eh, i'll take 2? not really. i can't believe that much for a frame only, and then not to be able to fit it properly.
Doesn't even look like a

Doesn't even look like a bike anymore. The abomination of plastic and cables hovering above the front wheel is an aeshetic mish-mosh. But I'm sure it's "fast."
Shiv (noun): a slang term for any sharp or pointed implement used as an improvised, knife-like weapon. Used in conversation . . .
Person A: "I bought that new $10,000 Specialized TT bike. I'll be faster.'
Person B: "Die!" [stab stab stab]
Person A: "I've been shiv'd!"

Or, "Hurry up and take the picture already! This seat is shiving me in the taint!"

But this one's my favorite. Wow, that's impressively aero. But doesn't the bike need someone to actually ride it? So what happens to your neato little wind tunnel results when you put an actual person on it?

or I paid for this bike and
or I paid for this bike and I feel I have been terminally 'shiv'd' in the wallet!!! ;-)
Giant is releasing the new
Giant is releasing the new Alliance Trinity Advanced SL set to retail for $13990! That comes with xc800runner's favorite grouppo, the Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 <---------See xc800runner's write-up on the grouppo. But with the afore mentioned 'fast' marketing thread Im sure its all its cracked up to be; after all 'they' said it would be! =p
I can see the headlines
I can see the headlines now... "Local man shiv'd in his sleep"
The avid triathlete was found slain in his bed in compression socks and some sort of "altitude simulation device" strapped to his face. Sources say that his wife was heard saying, "I warned him about buying that stupid bike..." while she was being placed in a waiting police car.
After looking at the Shiv
After looking at the Shiv position above, I would be all Shriv....led up after about 10 miles.
Plus, when has it been cool to have a bike that is worth 10 times the amount of your car.....I can just imaging the insurance agent giving you the Shiv when someone backs over the bike in the driveway.
Plus has anyone of the bike companies realized that the economy has been Shiv'd.
I find it amusing that the
I find it amusing that the bike contributes to only about 15%-20% of the total drag. The rider is the bulk of it. But I guess that if all top athletes are basically the same, their bike might give them the advantage.
It is a pretty intense design, but I don't think it will sell. Probably not really intended to be sold to the masses. But it does drum up interest in Specialized.

14 grand for something with a whole bunch of poorly designed electronics, and I still have to make it move myself? And it has a top cruising speed on the flats of around 25 mph? No thanks. For that kind of money, I can have equally poor electronics mated to a 134 bhp engine in the new and roll all day at those speeds. Or even better, I could save 5g's and get a Triumph Daytona and have just as much fun.
My 5 year old, aluminum Cervelo P2K will get me to the line just as fast as anything out today. But damn those cables! What if one breaks? Whatever shall I do if I can only use 10 speeds on my bike instead of 20? Oh, right, I live in the midwest. I can get away with 3.

That, quite literally, made me laugh out loud at work.

Oh hell, I think you should have to qualify to spend that much money on a bike or have it given to you. Don't get me wrong I don't think we should all have our carbon fiber bikes taken away but at what point is it silly and giving the sport a bad name.

Jeez guys, I just bought one. I figured paying 4x as much would make me 4x as fast... expecting 62mph avg at my next race. Be ready for my rr.
Why in the world does the
Why in the world does the frameset cost that much? $14,000 - seriously?! C'mon now... What are they doing in there, weaving gold into the frame? Makes no sense to me, and is actually kind of insulting.
These new bikes coming out look cool, and I am sure are "faster" - kinda sorta. But I'm walking the thin line that bikes like this need to be regularly maintained by pro mechanics. Brakes being hidden everywhere, cables routed at 90 degrees and around corners inside the frame...how is an average rider supposed to maintain this thing? I've heard some people talk about what a pain it is when whey are riding some of the current bikes out that have hidden brake calipers and hit a bump - only to have the brake shift and come into contact with the rim. In a case like that, the extra "aeroness" kind of goes out the door when you stop to try to adjust the brake back...
UCI banned it and Contador
UCI banned it and Contador is not to happy with that decision.
"When measured off the head tube, the bike fits within the rules, but because this part of the frame wraps around to the down tube, the UCI also insisted that a measurement be taken off the down tube. It was here that the bike ran into trouble and extended beyond the 8cm limit." VeloNews- 2/20/2010. Full article here.
Look at that thing.
