Is it ok to split a long run and do half in the morning and half in the evening? I have a 3 hour run coming up and my weekend is full, would it be ok to do 90 minutes in the morning and 90 in the evening? Is the effect still the same?

I read enough training logs to know that a lot of people split their long runs into 2 smaller runs on the same day. However, I've always assumed that their plan was designed for that. If your plan is for a 3 hour run, a single 3 hour run will probably work better than two 1.5 hour runs. However, if you did a 2 hour run and a 1.5 hour run, maybe that's more or less equal to a single 3 hour run. Just my 2 cents.

Nothing gets you ready for the pounding of a long run like a long run. While it has been shown that splitting a long run can still reap benefits...I feel that getting in at least one continuous long run helps prepare the body better. Splitting also seems to work well for folks who are running high milage weeks (50+miles) anyway. Not so much if you're down in the 25-35 range.
Why are you splitting? Time? Fear of the long run? If you're scheduled for 3 hours and haven't built up to it and are hoping to split the 3 hours to make it more managable...by all means do. Looking at www.jeffgalloway.com for a run/walk program may be of help. If it's a time constraint, maybe another day during the week would be better. I like Scott's idea of a longish run followed by a shorter long run.
You really have to try this stuff and see what works for you. Pam Reed the great long distance runner doesn't keep a log and runs twice a day for her long runs. It works for her. It may not work for you. The only way you'll know if it does is when you cross the finish line.

Same? no. Better than not doing it? Yes. Many running training programs have you do 'two a days'. They occasionally replace a full on long run, but it is a rarity. Do it that way if its the only way you can squeeze in the miles. I wouldn't make a habit of it though. Good luck!

I know pros marathoners do it all the time, but then again, that's why they are pros. The only way to get in 100 miles per week is to do both AM and PM runs. As IthinkIcan wrote, doing AM/PM is better than not doing one at all. I've read in Runner's World before that what counts is getting in the running in the same 24-hour period. But then again, as Anton wrote, nothing gets you ready for the pounding of a long run like a long run. Doing :90, then taking a nap, then doing another :90 just can't be the same as a continuous :180.

I've split a couple of times and always felt that the later run quality was greatly diminished and usually caused higher chance of injury. Now if time is short I get up earlier and get the full run in. Just my 2 cents.

Overall, you get out of it what you put in. I'm pretty sure that better results will be enjoyed by those who do not cut corners. Fit the long run in somewhere, somehow and you will be the better for it.
