So my nutz get numb during my 1/2 with my tri shorts does anyone recommend something with more padding there that actually looks "normal" maybe something by 2XU? Also my hip flexor/quads are sore at the end of the 70.3 and for a few days afterwards any strategies on how to keep them "loose" during a full? Thx

Try an Adamo Saddle. Not everyone likes them, but I would never go back to a "normal" saddle. It does take a little getting used to, but you won't have any numbness anymore.

Numbness has nothing to do with the amount of padding. If you have pressure in the wrong places it happens. You have to find a saddle that works well with your body.

For example, I have an Arionne Tri on my mountain bike, a specialized toupe on my road bike and the Specialized Tritip SL on my TT bike. Those are the ones that I have found that result in the least numbness for me. For me it wasnt just numb nutz, everything was getting numb, and thats kinda scary.

dude i just finished a 70.3 (Providence) and my entire package is STILL numb. Doc said my bike position was too aggressive and combined with a rough stretch of roads, i compressed some of the nerves that run thru the taint. he has the nerve endings in my junk are necrosed and need 1-3 weeks to regenerate. they grow at about 0.5 to 1 mm per day.

also, i cramped up bad (both vastus medialis) during the 70.3 just as i got into the run. hence, mine are sore as hell STILL. I think this is related to a bad / overly aggressive aero position.

anyway, i would reassess your position or even look into getting a new saddle. that should help. i read on some other fourms that people with my condition have switched to the adamo ism saddle and that it works wonders.

Thanks guys I ride a Cervelo P2sl Dura-Ace the seat/saddle seemed very padded but maybe the aero position is too aggressive...I'll have someone take a look at it for me.

But for an IM don't you guys recommend a pair of bike shorts with more padding?

In my personal experience, more padding is not always a good thing. It can compress things even more in your sensitive area. The adamo racing saddle allows you to ride in an agressive position without compressing the nerves that result in numbness. I have found that I can ride mine with very little or no padding.

You have to go with what works on long training rides for IM. The two I've done, I was unable to get comfortable in tri shorts for training rides longer than 60-70 miles, so I changed into bike shorts after the swim. Comfort is way more important in the grand scheme than the extra minute or so in T1 and T2 putting on different shorts. I've found when my shorts aren't comfortable, I'm scooting around on the seat, tensing up my back, shoulders, and core, standing on the pedals, and am mentally distracted. All of those things cost chunks of time.

I've got a pair of tri shorts (De Soto Forza) that have worked OK up to 90 miles so far this year. I'm still undecided if they will be race-day shorts or not.

+1 I suspect your dilemma comes more from positioning than saddle selection because you mentioned hip flexor in the title of your post. As you get a better feel for your fit, try a selection of saddles recommended here. A reputable LBS should accept recent returns. I've bought four or five saddles - one at a time - and returned them each after 40k rides. Also, I think www.glorycycles.com or www.categoryonecycles.com will ship you several and you return the ones you don't like.

. . . cannot be unseen! I'm giggling (sorry) at your experience. I can see the Doc's diagnosis: "You see hoss, the feelin' nerves in your taint are crushed, that's why you can't feel your junk. Take two and call me in the morning."

+1 More padding = more saddle sores, which come from friction, not pressure. And yes, all that extra chamois padding and gel in the seat get bunched together and compress soft tissue even worse.

I'm intrigued by this saddle. The downward facing nose seems like it would help when aero/in drops. But I think it would lose it's benefit in climbs/sprints when I slide forward.

I really want to try this one, but I'm not so sure about "trying" a $500+ saddle:

i have Selle SMP Evolution now for second year... The BEST thing i ever bought by far ( and i have spend some $$$)... very worth the try, buy it from e-bay and try it.
other thing COULD be the hight of your saddle... check that out cause if you have to reach to far down with your foot you are puttin way too much preassure on your cajones.
and +1 on shorts padding - more pading is not going to help you if it is not in the right place!
my .2 cents....
