what pedals are good value?
I have ultegra pedals, but they are 330grams and are a bit heavy. I see that there are lighter ones, other brands for a similar price.
So what others are worth a moving too? never used anything other than shimano pedals.
Look??

I am not sure if or how much lighter they are but the Look Sprint pedal works well for me and you can pick up a pair for under 90 bucks on ebay!

Just looked, they are 250 grams a pair!

so reducing the rotating mass weight helps on pedals too?

is there a difference in performance between shimano and look?

or is it, you get what you pay for, $100 of shimano is as good as $100 for look.

yeah, just passing on the advice a great coach gave me. "Buy better food, not better equipment". I think that there is a lot of wisdom in that. We get very hung up on gear, and not hung up enough on being able to push the gear that we have effectively. I ride ultegra pedals, they are not perfect, but I don't think that they are the weak link in my racing. Here's a vote for keeping the pedals and going and taking a Total Immersion swim clinic, or a cycling technique class, who knows. Wish I could have addressed your question more directly, but that's my $0.02

Shimano SPD SLs come cheap via ebay and last forever. Go with either the 105 or Ultegra models.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

I love my Look pedals. I am still getting use to clipping in but it is so much easier to clip in with the Look than the SPD - IMHO. I am sure you get use to what you have regardless of what it is but even running through transition on Look vs. SPD is easier - for me anyway. I have two pairs of shoes - one is SPD - I use for spinning and my tri shoes, well that is obvious what I use them for, but those are Look (couldn't use SPD with the shoes). Out of the two I prefer my tri shoes.

Reducing weight anywhere helps. Yes, 330g is bulky, but IMHO, changing pedals for weight reduction should rank pretty low in the overall weight reduction heirarchy: first you worry about how much excess weight you are carrying around. Then frame, then wheels, then components. Nothing stupider than a pudgy rider pointing out how light his carbon cages are.

I like it. A revamped version of Merckx's "Don't buy upgrades. Ride up grades." (Which he doesn't tout too much anymore because he shills $7,500 bikes.) But to your OP, I ride Speedplay X5 @ 220g (the base model with ChroMo spindles as I am too manly for the ti spindles). Granted, 330g - 220g = ~4oz if my conversions are correct, which is literally a .12% difference (a fraction of 1%) of my rider+bike weight between the two pedals. So not really a big deal.

look keo carbons - do a google search and you can find 'em for about $150. They are lightweight, but to me it's not about the weight. It about the stiffness/flex. Same reason I would not recommend people go with spd style cleats for road/tri. The wider platform for the cleat creates a better power transfer as does the stiffer pedal. I've found a 5-10 watt difference in going from cheap spd pedal to my look keo carbons, and that isn't taking the weight drop into account.

anyway, just ramblin. Good luck!
