Stupid question for those who have done an IM

Ok, so last weekend on my long ride I hit something and slashed the sidewall on my BRAND NEW Micheling ProRace 3 tires. I could have used a buck to shim it, but had a couple of killer hills to decend. Hubby actually brought a spare tire so I put that on (funny because he forgot it the week before and I couldn't imagine WHY I would want a spare tire if I had tubes). This was my first experience with this kind of flat.

Question in an "actual" IM race what the heck would ya do? Keep a buck in your tool kit and hope for the best?Does the SAG wagon have extra tires? I have never had this happen so I am assuming it probably won't happen any time soon (at least I hope, those aren't cheap tires).

PS. got a brand new tire at the LBS on the way home :)

What IM are you doing? I'm doing Vineman Aug 1. Did we talk about this....anyway, I think the answer to your questions, yes...keep a buck or a patch kit (which they make for tubes and tires) and pray for the best. I think it's called a boot. Someone last week slit their tire and used it. From what I gather, most cyclists don't carry a spare tire...lucky your hubby had one! Can you be your personal sag mobile during the race:) However, I will defer to those who've experienced this before.

I am doing IMC (my 3rd) next month. BOOT---ok, not shim I am a spazz. I just have never had that happen. Flats yes, but never on the sidewall, it was unpatchable. SO funny though after the week before saying "why would we need a tire?""ahahahhah. Not so funny when I thought about what I would do if it happend in a race.

On race day...an empty gel packet works well and is much more durable than a George, Abe or Andy. I carry an old one in my tool pouch just in case. There's a guy I know who carries a little duct tape wrapped around a Chapstick for that purpose.
The Sags carry tubes and tires but are limited in what repairs they can make...and who wants to wait?

WOA explain the duct tape please. Would you just fold it over on top of it's self?
NEVER thought of a GU packet--GOOD IDEA.

I've put an old clincher in my bike special needs bag before. I figured then if I had to boot a tire in the first 56 miles I would at least have a chance to put on a good one.

I've heard of people carrying a boot made of a cut piece of old tire. Though a gu or duct tape would seem to work OK too.

The one time I blew my sidewall in a race (not an IM) it was well beyond booting. It had separated from the bead for about 8". I DNF'd.

Get a tube of Chapstick. Get a roll of duct tape. Roll duct tape around the Chapstick till you get several inches on it. You can fold over the end if you want. I don't and don't seem to have a problem, getting it off. Need a piece for a boot? Got it. Just rip off a hunk. Need some duct tape for a blister? Got it.
Make sure you leave the cap free so you can use the stick for your lips or to ease hot spots on your feet, preventing blisters.(Ultrarunning trick)

Cool Anton! thanks! I will always have chapstick :) I will go do that now so I have it for my ride tomorrow.
PJT- mine was questionable which is why we just replaced the tire. Thankfully it was just a training ride. I would hate to DNF an IM because of a flat which is what got me thinking :(
Good idea on the special needs--I usually have a tube but not a tire, I may do that this time.

I love the Chapstick and Duct Tape combination. Simple and effective... thanks for sharing Anton.

I'm one who carries a section of an old clincher tire to use as a boot, and I carry a mini-box cutter knife to trim it as necessary.
I also carry two tubes AND a patch kit.

I ain't waitin' on the side of the road cryin' my eyes out waitin' for the BikeBarn mechs to arrive,
and I ain't DNFing either, not after seeing Chris Sadowski have his bike destroyed by a motorcycle at Kona 2006 and WALK 7 miles in socks carrying it, made the cut-off and finished the run on blistered feet

Iz got no 'xcuses.

The Chris Sadowski story came to mind when I read the original post. If there was a SAG wagon in an IM, I'd think he would of waited for it.

There is a sag wagon.... but then you have to quit racing... ;) In his case, it wasn't something fixable on the bike.

Cool stuff here.

What I never understood about the Chris Sadowski story was why he took his shoes off. Although clumbsy, wouldn't it have been better to have been in your shoes than out of them?

You can move faster and with less effort in socks or bare feet than in cleats. And I'd venture to say the blisters you would have after a 7 mile trot in bike cleats would be epic.
