Interval training
I am going to be a freshman in high school next year, and I just started xc, and I have ran off and on before. The first week of xc we started to intervals, so I think that you should be fine to start them now. That being said I can't tell you how far, or how fast to do them, because I am not too experienced. Hope you have fun and improve! ;)
Tired is a state of mind, exhaustion is a state of body.
I wouldnt start intervals for at least 4-8 weeks. Friel recommends a month of tempo runs before starting intervals. It's not a bad idea, and works for me. Doing tempo first allows your body to prepare for the harder work the intervals will involve.
I would hope any high school coach assigning intervals immediately when school starts told you all to run easy/ steady over the summer. Doing intervals over the summer for a fall XC season is BAD coaching.
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
hey dduerde,
Intervals are fine just remember they should be at Aerobic threshold not Anaerobic threshold.
I'm a huge fartlek fan as they can be done anywhere and you don't need a track. I like to do them on a trail.. This is an oldie but a goodie..
Mona's Fartlek
Run 60mins - 2hrs and insert set below;
The workout is 20 minutes of fartlek with fast recovery, done as follows:
-2x90 seconds hard (tempo to 10K pace) with 90 seconds recovery steady, not jogging.
-4x60 seconds hard, 60 seconds steady.
-4x30 seconds hard, 30 seconds steady.
-4x15 seconds hard, 15 seconds steady.
Jog rest of session.

Hope this helps,

Everyone has a limit... Not everyone finds out where it is!

how much base mileage should do before throwing intervals into the mix? I've been training for a little over a month now, but i'm not sure when i need to start intervals. I'm gonna be a sophomore in college and in high school was an all state soccer player so i have experience with interval like training. This is my first month tho being allowed to run for endurance and distance instead of speed so I have little knowledge on how to train.
