Looking for a bit of advice from others who walk the fine line that is tuned athlete and over-trained athlete.

For the first time in my ~8 year tri / endurance "career" I am trying to work through a bit of a case slower than usual running. My swim and bike are right on schedule this spring but my run has been a struggle. My legs don't feel tired and I am putting in usual mileage - but I seem to have to really put in an effort and concentrate (ugh, thinking!) to hit my pace.

Here is the situation:
1. I have a 13.1 run (in which I MUST beat my friends) in 3 weeks. Normally, I would be begining my taper next week but I am a bit behind schedule and feel like more speed work is necessary (base is not a problem for me).
2. Maybe my legs are dead - they feel heavy every once-in-a-while but not as bad a previous years (plus they feel great when clipped into my bike).
3. I have a full summer of OLY and Sprint races beginning 2 weeks after this Mini.

I am trying to find the right balance of training for this short term goal as well as stay on track for a summer full of racing.

Anyone had luck with massage? Resting? More training (please say YES, I love swim/bike/run!!)

Advice?

yes, make sure you diet is good. perhaps any changes over previous years?

Don't fret too much on your run, it's early in the season and it sounds like your base is there. If that's what you've been focused on then your "high end" spend won't be at it's optimum until you start working in some of the tempo and/or speed work. stick with your game plan and you should get your run back.

be aware, as well, that working more on other displines may effect another. i.e. having a stronger bike may negatively impact your run and visa versa. I recall Steve Larson working more on his run his second year and you could definitely see a decline in his bike performance. So, remember it's a balance and trying to find the right balance to get you across all three sports in the your best time.

I've been dealing with the same thing lately and have found three things that have helped me.

1) Definitely get a massage. Release some of the lactic acid and break up that scar tissue that builds up after long training excursions or speed sessions.

2) Cut sugar and processed carbs out of your diet for a couple of weeks. I started this yesterday and I haven't felt sleepy at all like I usually do. Most importantly, my run yesterday was super fast because of the amount of energy I had. I had a really hard time slowing down and staying at that speed. My energy level didn't really go away when I was done either. I also had some liver detox tea as well yesterday. Tasted like licorice (my least favorite flavor), but was well worth it.

3) The most important factor. Your inner coach. There's is acutally an article about it on the home page of trifuel today. Pretty good article. Anyhow, I started working on this two months ago and once engrained into your head and with some practice, it takes over from the cynical voice. My runs have been a lot more pleasant since I started this. I keep my self talk positive and light. I am able to tell when it's my energy level bringing me down, but at least it's not negative self talk.

You may just need to change up your routine a little. Maybe you're bored with your usual running routine or you just need some rest. But if you're wanting to beat your friends, I'd suggest not overtraining. You're just asking for an injury and then you won't be able to attain your goal.

Anyhow, good luck! You can do it! Find a positive uplifting reason to run, rather than just your competition. :)

Namaste!
