I was in Lubbock last weekend to race at Buffalo Springs. My training has gone very well this year and I thinking with a good race and a little luck that I might be able to grab one of the coveted Kona slots. But sometimes things don't go as planned...

I was having a good swim and all of a sudden about 30 minutes into the swim, I couldn't breathe. I called for a kayak and the lady in the kayak looked at me said your lips are blue (the water was really warm)... I said pull me out. Thank goodness for the kayaks and boats and EMTs in the medical tent - it was the first time I have had to use them and they were all great! I'm also glad I had enough sense to realize that I was in a lot of trouble.

We flew home on Sunday night and I was still having trouble breathing so I had my husband take me to the ER. I have spent the last 2-1/2 days in the hospital being given every test the doctors could think of including a cardiac catheterization. The doctors finally figured out that I had an allergy-induced acute asthma attack (I would not recommend having an asthma attack in the middle of a lake...). I'm relieved that the doctors did all those cardiac tests and ruled out that my trouble breathing was caused by a heart problem.

This was the first asthma attack I have ever had (I guess you're never too old to try something new...). Going forward, I have to carry an inhaler with me at all times until I see a lung specialist to sort out why this happened and make sure it doesn't happen again.

Wow, glad to hear you are okay. I've had asthma attacks before and they are no fun, couldn't imagine having one in the middle of a lake. Good job on recognizing the trouble and taking care of yourself by seeking medical attention. I haven't had asthma problems in a few years so hopefully your problem goes away quickly.

as a physician and asthmatic, i'm really glad that you got help. the good news is that there are really good meds that enable people to have world class performances and still be asthmatic. the bad news is that sometimes you have to take meds every day. but sounds like you are getting good care, and your drs can help you figure out the appropriate regimen.

you said "allergy induced". Did they determine what you are allergic to? Scary situation regardless. good thing you told them to pull you out. Glad you are okay!

Not yet but I imagine they will do tests. They think it was "the perfect storm" of conditions that caused this - an allergen I hadn't been exposed to (cotton, west texas dust?), an small area of pneumonia in one of my lungs and trying to swim fast.

I have had asthma all my life. Most of my marathon photos show me with an inhaler in one hand. Now there are meds as one has posted, that do a good job of controlling my asthma. But, like was said, they are taken daily. But it sure beats the inhaler and its side effects. I do tris now and get in the water for lake swims with a certain degree of confidence that asthma won't ruin my day or take my life.
