How often do you swim in your workout plan
I try to swim 3x's a week. Somedays it's the only thing I do but other days it's on the same day I bike or run or even both. I hadn't really thought about it affecting my other workouts. I often have a better swim after I've already done another workout. Maybe being warmed up? I do have to make sure I eat. A lot. Sometimes I'll have to do a GU before a harder swim workout.
I haven't done a swim workout in over a year now. I'm a little slower, but more importantly after long swim "races" my shoulders hurt like crazy for 2 weeks.
why havent u done a swim workout??

Based on his other posts I think TryScott is being funny.
I double swimming up with another workout. I usually run or bike in the morning and swim in evening. This is mostly due to my pool access. If you're new to swimming, you are unlikely to 'over-train' for it. That's the great thing about swimming, its so easy on your body (impact-wise) that overuse injuries are not usual. If you form is good your shoulders should not get injured.
I swim a minimum of 2x a week, but in the summer it's usually more like 3 - 5x a week. Often if I can, I get in the water and just do a nice stretch-out 1000m or so. I feel like it keeps everything else feeling limber and smooth (kind of like doing yoga). But I do two focused swim workouts a week for sure.
If you have good form, increased swimming will probably not hurt you in any way. But many triathletes have poor form and you can get repetitive use injuries, especially in the shoulders if you overdo the yardage with poor technique. Your best bet if you want to swim more than 2x a week is to really use that time to focus on drills and technique. For 95% of the triathletes out there, they would gain more speed from less yardage and more drills than the other way around.

I think IronMom is spot on about this one. Better to drill 3x a week than just grind out yardage. At least for me, swimming more than that starts to take away precious time from the other two disciplines (oh, and the family).
I swim 3x a week. I sometimes add a day or two in the summer just because the outdoor pool is open and it's hot outside and it feels good. any or all of the above for an extra wkout if I have the time :)

what do you guys mean by drills? i've been doing workouts that are like buildups with a 50m then 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 400, 300, 200, 100, 50 etc. is that a drill??
I swim 3x per week, usually after a run. I'll warm-up for 300 m., then do 200 m.(8x25) drills, then working set usually 1000-2000 m., 200 m.(8x25) kick drill, 300 m. cool-down. My third swim of the week is usually an endurance swim of 1500-2000 m. My swim times are usually better after a good run. I wish my runs were faster after a good swim. I like to drills because it makes pool training seem not as boring than just jumping in and swimming a certain distance.
I swim at least twice a week, sometimes three. The first two swims are in the "must do" category, one a 1 mile OWS, the other 2,000 yards either 4x500, 2x1000, or 1x2000. But that OWS swim might move to a pool swim every other week because I'm much more comfortable in open water now and the lake is 20 minute drive but the pool is three blocks away. I was doing two OWS in May, and it helped immensely....my race swim time for 800 yards went from 22:00 in 2008 to 15:00 in 2009 in the same race and same conditions by doing the two OWS per week for a month.
The third is a drill workout I like to do but sometimes don't get it in because of my schedule.
This is all the swimming I do because I need to focus on bike and run.

No, those are intervals or sets. Drills are where you concentrate on your technique, or one aspect of it. Like a high-elbow recovery drill or a 2-beat kick drill, or a hand-entry drill.
My very general rule of thumb is that if a swimmer's pace per 100 yards is more than 1:40 - 1:45, they're better off concentrating on drills than on distance sets or intervals.

2x a week for me. My swimming is way better than my running or biking so I don't need to spend more time.

3-4 times a week depending on whether I have a "Triple Saturday." I usually swim in the morning and then bike or run at lunch, doesn't seem to affect my other workouts. I have my longest swim the same day I have my track workout and it works out fine.

I was wondering how often feel that they can put swimming into there workout plan without overtraining it. I've been swimming and running alot on the same day feeling that swimming wont hinder my running all that much and allowing me to train both more. Any thoughts on this?
