Buffalo Springs Lake 70.3 RR

This was my second 70.3 this season and sencond race(Galveston 70.3) of this distance so still very much the rookie at longer distance races. I scoped the course out on Friday and i have to say that with living and training in the flat land of Houston the course had me very concerned, but i know i would be able to complete.

The swim was really very nice. The water was pretty warm, but of course it was wetsuit legal thanks to creative water tempature testing. I was in the third wave and just took my time. I followed the advice i read on here slow is smooth, smooth is fast. As a result i finished the swim in 42:17 which was just under 4 minutes faster then my previous race of 46:14. So I felt good about that.

First tranisition was slow as always, but still Faster then last time around, 2:36. Previous race 3:42. Getting better.

The bike is my best part, the only part that really got me was the first hill right out of T1. It was a 7% climb and with my heart rate already spiked from teh swim I was unable to make it up with out stopping and walking, I know it is bad but i had to do it. The rest of the course which was quit hilly made it a challenge but i did great in my mind and was very happy with the results. The conditions on the bike at this point were getting interesting, The temp for Lubbock was very cool mid-70's, but it did start to rain at the end of the bike. There was also a nice 20+ wind to fight, but hey that is part of cycling right.

Ride time: 3:12:59 Previous 3:03:39

T2 was good as could be putting on wet shoes. Time 1:53(previous 1:34)

Wnet out on the run and i felt good for the first 9 miles then it all started to fall apart. Since i did not have the chance to train on hills like this course brings my legs really fell apart on me. I had to resign my self to walking and running when i could. I finished the run in 2:27:00(previous 2:44:39) so even with legs stopping on me it got better.

Over all I dropped 13 minutes on my time which with this course I am happy with. Time 6:26:49(previous 6:39:52)

I also think I became a real triathlete on this race, cause I ended up going to the restroom will riding. I have to say getting your self to go while riding is the hardest thing i have ever had to do.

But again I am very happy with this race and the results I was able to post.

Thanks for reading.

Great Job!

Rumour has it they (officials?) conveniently measure the water temp just above a spring in the deep part of the lake. And 'Oh no,' walking the first hill out of T1 happens. As you know, the road from T1 goes straight up immediately. Did you not rack your bike in small chain ring/big cog? Your legs aren't even awake yet and have to face a long, steep climb. Nasty, huh? What did you think of 'Energy Lab II' (the long out-and-back by the electrical plant)?

Congrats!

great race!!! I was there but just did the sprint, I'm from the area so the hills are nothing for me I usually pass a lot of people on those hills. Other than the rain I thought it was a beautiful day and the atmosphere at Buffalo Springs is always so positive...other than the few people I saw who wrecked on the bike it seemed like everyone had a great day!!! Awesome to see some people Kona bound...

great work in shaving off all that time from last year. i am looking forward to next season and hopefully at least one 70.3 and one full.

Congrats on your finish!
