Getting stroke count down

So today I found out that the masters swim class doesn't start until May, and I've been making some pretty big improvements lately - but I don't want to wait until May to improve some more.

I can consistently hit 20-21 strokes per lap, but I would like to get that down under 20. I am now able to breath every 3 strokes, which has helped to even everything out. I have also semi-conquered my breathing problem, after discovering that it helps to hold my breath for a second instead of exhaling as soon as I put my face in the water and thus lose all the oxygen I just inhaled.

So at 20 strokes I think I have a half-decent stroke with no obscenely glaring deficiencies. My question is this - for those of you who have seen yourself improve from my level, what was it you did that most helped to bring your stroke count down?

How long is the pool, I do 12 to 13 strokes in a 25m pool when counting. 3 little things to do,

1 When your hand enters the water move your shoulder forward and reach for the end of the pool. Keep your spine straight.

2 make sure you don't blow all of your air out after you breathe, helps you float.

3 Finish each stroke touching your thigh as far down as you can reach making sure , again the spine is staight.

A good way to score this is to do what some call golfing. Swim a 50, count your strokes for the fifty, add your time for the 50 and you come up with the golfing score... Strokes40 time 40 = 80 . That is not par, par is 72. you have to streamline to get to 72. My best score was 62, last night at the pool I did a score of 72. Your swim is not to be all out It is to be comfortable using good form.

The three items above will be helpful but I don't think we should try to think of everything we could do. When teaching a skill I like to concentrate on one or two things at one time.

Everything Geochuck said plus one more thing. After your hand enters the water and you reach for the end of the pool, count one onethousand before pulling. This tends to keep me relaxed and will lower your stroke count.

I have noticed that when swimming one direction in the pool, I can pretty easily hit 18 strokes. But when I come back the other way, even if I rest completely first, it always takes 2 more strokes.

I don't think it's me - could it be something with the pool that's causing this? Or am I crazy?

In that video geochuck I notice that the guy behind the fast one seems to be doing the same things other than he hasn't got the momentum and he is not turning to his side enough. Is that what is lacking for HIS speed?

The swimmer is a swimmer. The other guy is going through the motions but is not a swimmer. I am going to look at the two and will give you a break down of both. I will be back.

First thing the other swimmer is bringing his hand out mid swim trunks the swimmer is finishing his stroke way down his thigh. The other guy is slapping his left hand on the water. Remember newtons third law - every action has an equal and opposite reaction. You hit the water hard it hits you back. That is two of about 15 things the other guy does wrong.

A couple of other mistakes his feet are kicking above the water. He is weight loading the front part of his body by having his head too high.

One more mistake he appears to be dropping his right elbow not reaching..

TSSC Timed Swim Stroke Count... Your stroke count is down to 8 or 10 but the timed swim time is up to 50 sec for 50m this is not good. It is better to stroke a little faster and get your swim time down.

Something else that might help your stroke count get down is to experiment with hand paddles. concentrate on smooth, efficient, FULL strokes- the paddles will help. Look for them on Kiefer.com or other such swim shops.

Happy Training!
