Swim breathing in a sprint ?
No. Whether you're swimming 200 yards or 10,000, you should be breathing every 3. The only time you'll see a big change in breathing is for a 50, in which case you're breathing once or twice during the whole race.

Not fast enough.
You should breathe on whichever stroke is most comfortable for you.

Every 3 strokes if you can bilaterally breathe. If not, alternating between every 2 and every 4 strokes is good. Every 3 is a bit more efficient for me and it helps keep pulling equal considering you are not favoring any one side.
Simon - I swim every third stroke in the pool no matter the distance....however, when I swim in OW (very murky), I breathe every stroke simply because I am not as comfortable in OW as the pool so it helps me to relax. I don't want my face under water any longer than it has to! As soon as I get more comfortable, I will start breathing every third stroke as I've already started trying it. From what I've been told, swimming every third stroke makes you more efficient since you are more streamline (not picking your head up on every stroke).
try distance breathing... breathe on your right twice, then take three strokes, and breathe on your left twice, repeat.
Tired is a state of mind, exhaustion is a state of body.
Many/most triathletes breathe every 2nd stroke. Some alternate sides by breathing 2, 2, 2, 3, 2, 2, 2, 3, or some similar pattern. If you can breathe every 3rd and keep your oxygen uptake going, that's probably optimal. But I know for me (as for many other distance swimmers) that to keep the correct pace, I need to breathe every 2 for oxygen.

+1. Over time, I find every third stroke will leave me a little breathless. I tend to breath every two, with about seven strokes on one side and then seven on the other.
A sprint distance triathlon isn't really a "short" swim. A short swim is usually more like 100 yards or less--something you can do in under a minute. Because, bottom line, one you get over about 90 seconds of exertion, falling into oxygen debt will make a BIG dent in your performance. Most folks simply cannot go strictly anaerobic for longer than about a minute and a half.

Hi
I have seen various posts on whether you should breathe on every 3rd stroke or just on one side but am i right in thinking that whilst there are various adv/disadv that for a sprint triathlon the extra oxygen of every second stroke means pretty much everyone does it every second stroke for such a short distance?
Many thanks
Simon
