Racing back to back
Pretty hardcore there missy. You should just wear a g-string in the Oly. Make sure you take some good pics and post them! Good Luck!!!
#1: I've never done it and probably never would (I'm injury paranoid after this knee thing). If you push yourself as hard as you plan to in the HIM, then you may be a little beat up the next day. After Boise 70.3 I was not even thinking of racing. If you go through with it more power to you. Just make sure that you're not sore in the wrong places before you go race again. My knee was pretty tender after the race so I wouldn't of raced on it. But if you feel good the next morning then you may be okay. I would just make the call race morning depending on how you feel, there's nothing gained in risking injury.
#2: Wait, you get the speedo brothers and now you're paranoid about showing belly. I call double standard!

Uh, when did I comment on the speedo brothers?

1. I have never done it but it sounds like a fun weekend. In the few years that I have been doing tri it still amazes me how little soreness I feel the day after a race, even a HIM, compared to a stand alone running race. I agree with you that it will help your mental outlook for the IM.
2. Sorry, zero creative ideas about costumes. Maybe a google search for the NYC New Year's Eve run or some other race known for costumes might help.

Well I tend to injure easily. Perfect example--after recovering from my stress fracture, on my second run I did something, not sure what to my knee. Run was GREAT--almost as fast as previous to my injury but my knee ballooned up and I have had to rest it the last week. WTF? It's never ending this season it seems. So I personally wouldn't do it. Also I would worry about doing it with IMC coming. You have the base and speed to do great there so honestly I don't think doing an Oly would be any benefit to you.
If you feel great the next day though, go for it --you are young and can recover more easily :)
Thanks everyone!
My plan is do the HIM and IF I feel ok in the end to sign up for the Oly. Usually after racing all I suffer from is a little soreness and fatigue, all of which I can handle for an Oly. I'm mostly concerned with the heat, but thus far it's in my favor.
Hehe, got my costume picked out.

I did triple T, 4 triathlons back to back, but i wasn't racing them, i was there to have "fun" and complete it, more like a training weekend. super sprint on Friday, 2 Olys on Saturday and HIM on Sunday, i think if i can do it, you can!

Ditto...
Never done what you're planning, but I'm the kind of person that would do it. Long course races are mentally challenging...especially when you are pushing for a PR like you indicate. You probably already anticipate this, but feeling downright awful is very common when pushing yourself hard over the long course. Proper nutrition and (your number 2, attitude) are the only things that will get you through it.
That said, your body has plenty of time to recover in 18-22 hours between races if you are eating right. Considering your volume is probably pretty high, there shouldn't be any physical reservations about doing your back to back race unless you have an injury.
What's the deal with costumes during races? I never understood it (marathons) and have never even seen it in triathlons. Can someone explain this to me? I could understand doing it at a Halloween Triathlon (which would be totally sweet), but in July?
Didn't you just spend a lot of time aqua jogging not so long ago with stress fracture (or some injury)? I don't want to be a wet blanket, but perhaps give some thought to the possibility of injury before signing up for race #2.
I think I can, I think I can, I think I can...
There will be pictures guaranteed.
You are correct, I was injured and am completely healed. I have given much though into this hence why I am not signing up until after I finish the HIM. Nothing is guaranteed. The only way I'll sign up is if my body tells me it is ok. We've been pretty good partners during the last few months, I've learned to listen and it's learned to respond. Great, now I'm talking about myself in the third person :)
Costumes are fun! I figure mentally I'll hit a lot point during the Oly. Given my volume over the last couple months I should be able to handle the physical aspect ok, it's fatigue that will bite me in the tail during the Oly. I figure if I have a ridiculous outfit it will give me something to laugh and smile at.

DO IT! =)

Was demolishing the bathroom today getting ready to re-do it. Started thinking about how we demolish ourselves sometimes and then I though about you, Kat...
I'll be buzz kill number two here. I say no. You're coming off an injury that really pushed you down into your boots and now you're risking it again? Some injuries have a way of coming back when you push too hard. I mean, you're gonna do what you're gonna do...but I'm not sure it's the wisest...spiffy costume or not.

What consideration have you given to the fact that you'll need a lot more time to recover from an HIM+Oly vs "just a HIM?" I get that you want a leg up on the mental fear of IMC, but I say give yourself the best possible training, then suck up the fear on race day at IMC.
There's races that I don't taper for, but I can't imagine entering a race that I do not intend to race. Lots of people do, but you don't remind me of the type to enjoy an event if you are holding back.
I'd give a thumbs up to Anton every year for the Goofy Challenge, but this is different.
Honestly, as fun as it sounds, with the injury you are just coming off and the focus race at IMC I don't doubt that you could do it, but do doubt that it would be smart for your race at IMC. It's not just about the race time, but the recovery time. Find a great costume and be the best cheerleader during the oly :)

Good Luck!!! Cheerleader outfit with a g-string! Lots of pics please!
Good luck with Pac Crest, I'm sure you will kill it with a new PR.

5:44:20 - 2nd place AG finish. PR over course, but not HIM - the bike is 58 miles, if it had been the traditional 56 it would have been a HIM PR.
I will be recovering with the Oly tomorrow. I'm tired but body feels ok overall :)

Great job KittyKat! RAWR!!!!
Great job and enjoy the race tomorrow.

Did the OLY today - 3:05 (28 mile nike) 15th AG. Took it VERY easy. Whenever my HR would hit 165 on the run I'd walk :) I feel freaking fantastic! The Oly was a great recovery workout.
BTW, I did do it in costume and will post pics once they're downloaded :)

Well done. Take it easy this week.
You are some kind of beast. congratulations! just make sure you REALLY take care of yourself because you'll probably get really tight. A friend of mine did 2 HIM's within 3 months of each other, and he didn't recover right. he's been out injured for this entire year -> continuously tight IT band.
go enjoy yourself a well-deserved massage
I'm impressed. You are more of a man than I am (probably faster than me too). I curl up into the fetal position the day following races. What I don't do is go out and race again. Good work, very impressive.

Nice, congrats on successful races!
looking forward to the pics

+1 to the above huge congrats!
You are totally twice the man I am! I was ready to die after the one HIM I tried. I could barely hobble into the McDonalds to stuff my face let alone race.
Plus, you did both of your races in about the time it took me to do the one! Awesome.

Well I suppose that's not the first time I've been called a MAN or said I had bigger balls - not so sure what to think of that :) Maybe work on my femininity?
Did I mention the event was at 3500ft altitude and we climbed to 6500ft and I train at sea level? That and the heat was a nice little challenge.
Anywho, today....I woke up feeling GREAT. So on Saturday when I was done with the HIM I went back to the house and took a massive ice bath - 28lbs of ice. I finished off the night rolling the hell out of my legs and back with the foam roller and stick and trying to stuff in enough food to recover fully. Slept in my Zoot compression tights. Sunday I woke up tired but not as bad as I expected. Last night we partied, had quite a bit of alcohol....I know, big NO NO. I slept in compression tights and took a salt stick with 8 oz of water before bed and woke out today - FEELING OH SO FINE.
I'm going to take the next few days off....then lightly get back into training. This whole IM training thing is working :)
Here's an post race shot from Sunday. My buddy has a few action shots on the bike but those will be a few days to get we're all still at the race site.

You're awesome! Will you marry me?
Did the OLY today - 3:05 (28 mile nike)
You took it easy and got 3:05?! That's my goal time for my upcoming Oly and I'll be fresh after a week of taper. Awesome performance. Nothing like a bit of shame to get me moving (of course you are quite a bit younger than me...yeah, that's why I'm so much slower...ok, I feel better. where did I put that donut?).
Sounds like you've got a great base for IM Canada. Good luck.

I do have a pic on the bike and dressing in T1 - but someone else has those and I'm having a hard time getting them. Grrrrr.

I'm going out on a limb and saying it's a good white trash outfit, even though I can't read the shirt. If you were NOT going for the white trash look, I'll remove my foot from my mouth now. Certainly someone that works at buying tri gear had more than a tanktop with what looks like the name of a band on it to wear...

Your on point. It had a HD Choppers logo on it. I also had a zebra print clutch to run with. Lol, I'd stop along the run course and offer my drugs aka electrolyte pills.
One of the shots my legs looks like cottage cheese, WTF?!

You looked grrrrreat! My proposition still stands!

Two questions
#1
Has anyone "Raced" an HIM and then done an Oly as recovery the next day? If so please share your experience. As long as Pac Crest isn't 90+ (which at this point the weather is not forecasting hell on earth) that is my intention. I'll be shooting for a very aggressive PR on the HIM - well see what happens. I thought it would be a good idea to do the Oly the next day for a few reasons.
1. I have yet to not PR on a triathlon (knock on wood for Saturday HIM). This needs to happen and I figure what better way to do it.
2. My biggest fear in doing IMC is the mental challenge of being able to pick myself up after hitting bottom, over and over again. Doing the Oly on Sunday will be brutal and will force me to work on my positive outlook.
3. More endurance and as long as I stay in targeted Z2 could be beneficial in muscle recovery.
4.Why the hell not? I'm nuts, we all know this.
#2
What costume should I dress up as for the Oly :)
Right now I'm thinking uber short tri shorts and sports bra for the swim, slip on a short cut off denim skirt and white beater tank for the bike and run and go white trash - not to forget the over zealous amount of waterproof makeup.
Any better ideas? Keep in mind I'm looking for low cost and not willing to expose my stomach as carb loading does bad things to my midsection.
Thanks!
Kat
