My AHA moment in the open water....

Okay, realised what a moron I am on Saturday. I did a swim to a buddy's cabin (1000m) for a BBQ, felt really good and comfortable in the open water albeit a little out of breath like I usually am, was swimming along happily singing my Dori "just keep swimming" theme song when suddenly I realised what was making me out of breath...in the pool I breath expulsively. It came to me that I was blowing out the whole time (dunno the name of that one) rather than what I did in the pool normally. So I got in the pool this morning, tried both, and realised I could not come close to my normal 100m times breathing out steady. So I hit the open water tonite (that's right, swam 2.5h today to make it all better) and realised exactly how much happier my breathing is with the expulsive...duh!
So am I the only idiot? How did I do that? I have to make a new arrangement for my theme song now as it was a bit dependant on the breathing...just kidding! Thought I would share as my swim team coach and I had a laugh about it this morning and my open water buddies were laughing their asses off me sprinting around the pond like a mad woman!

What does "expulsively" mean?

It's when you bolw out all your breath just before you put your head out to breathe in, rather than steady blowing out. That being said, I swam this morning in Gander Lake (18kms long, they have yet to find the bottom in some areas, frickin cold) and when I am cold I have to blow out steady so I don't accidentally gasp in water. I thought it was expulsive breathing, but I think some people call it explosive breathing. Anyway, it's going well!

That's interesting, don't swim coaches usually teach the opposite (ie. steady breath out)? I blow out steadily, but with enough oomph that I get all the air out before my next breathe.
