Swimming GPS watch?????
Garming 310xt is the only one that I know of thats GPS and fully waterproof.
from reading slowtwitch, i would be careful about the 310. it seems that it might not be that waterproof after all . . . and gps just doesn't work that well, or at all in the water, because of the inability of the signal to penetrate through water (at least so i've read).
I talked to a guy that said he wore his 305 with a strap and put it around his neck. I'm not sure how the device stayed on the back. Seems like it would slide around to the front. Before I could get the details, the gun went off and our race started. If you want to use the 305, it is possible.
Here is one example of someone doing it. I've seen others also.
Just curious, but why would you need GPS while swimming?
Are you swimming in a pool? If so, How about just a normal watch and time your swim and count the laps?
Are you training OW? I use walkjogrun.net to figure distance and time it the same way.

Personally when I do go out into the lake to swim, I just do it for time. I know how fast (basically) I can swim "X" meters, so base it off that.
Wear the 305 under your swim cap without any bags. I will be quite safe from the water, Then it is just a quick snap onto the wrist with a quick release bike/run kit.
One word of advice...... DO NOT TAKE YOU CAP OFF UNTIL YOU GET OUT OF THE WATER!!!!!!!!
Did that on the weekend and dropped it in the lake at the end of the swim of the tri I was doing. Luckily, after the race my friends and I wend back to see if we could find it, and one of them found it in about 4 feet of water. Still working, but lost the satellite reception. So water does affect the reception. And no, it didnt get damaged. The reason it gets damaged while swimming is the pressures that the swimming motion produces makes it beleive it is below 10 feet of water or more so water is forced into the watch. Under the cap, there is no prossure to force the water past the seals.
As for using a GPS while swimming..... In a pool it is useless. In open water, where you have no lane line or reference for distance or direction it is an invaluable tool to get your pace (Set pace alarms, and you will hear them) and get you distance afterwards for actual pace. The biggest help is it tells you if you are swimming straight. I used to zig zag like crazy, until I identified I pulled harder on the right so I had to strengthen my left and now I swim relatively straight.
As for the 310XT, I have read good and bad reviews on it. Looking to upgrade myself, but I havent seen the advantage yet since I have the 305 figured out for swimming in Open water.

Can anyone please help me find a watch I can use in the water. I want to buy a watch that I can use while I'm training for my ironman - just the swimming portion. i am looking for one that has gps so I know how far I'm swimming and how fast. I have a Garmin 305 and I dont want to chance ruining it. Do they sell a GPS swimming watch? Or do they sell waterproof cases for the garmin? please help
