sorry if this is a repeat question. i am wondering about people's recommendations for a first im. i live in hawai'i, so travel is going to be pretty expensive almost anywhere. i don't think that i can qualify for a spot anywhere this year, so it's pay or lottery for me.

thank you in advance.

Florida is "easy" because it's flat. And Kona is the only "real" one anyways. (I keed, I keed.)

Seriously, my number 1 criterian is to sign up for one where the 16-24 weeks prior to the race affords the best training weather. Granted, you may have 72 and sunny year-round, but I am never training through months of 100* for an IM ever again.

You live in Hawai'i?
I thought locals got special entry privileges to Kona.

Can't you just sign up and pay the entry fee?

At
Ironmanlive.com
you can get all the info about each race including alttitude, course maps and so on.

FYI, Humidity is very low at Ironman Canada as it is semi-desert climate, but maybe you like high humidity?

I'm resisting being sarcastic here, but you have been a member over a year now..

You see that row of buttons at the top of this page? That starts with HOME, GEAR, TRAINING?

The fourth one is EVENTS. Try clicking it.

Tribro went to some trouble creating that resource, pity you didn't see it before..

I suspect you are looking for people's feedback on races they have done, and since I haven't quite done mine yet, I have no advice for you but I did choose Vineman (Santa Rosa, CA), Aug 1 as my first IM. I chose it mainly because of it the swim, it's in a river and from what I've been told, an "easy" swim assuming you've trained properly. Believe it or not, I am still one of those people that think I will get bit by a shark, so no ocean for me...yet!

I will let you know how it goes!

If that is the case, google "______ race report."

Pick the one that makes you excited. It will help fuel all the hours and hours of training leading up to the race. I don't think an Ironman is as hard as people make it out to be -- it is the training that is the hard part. Race day is party time :)

trifnd.com has a big ironman and iron distance calendar in the US and international. pick a race that gives you enough times to train with your family/work obligations and looks cool and gets you excited. pick a couple then look around for reviews and see if they are good races or not.

hope that helps.

thanks much for all the constructive comments. i will definitely find an ironman (wish it was kona, but can't have everything) and look for reviews.

+1
When you are training, I can guarantee that you will be thinking about your upcoming race. It better be a motivating thought about a race that gets you excited. People afraid of sharks don't pick an IM in the ocean, do they?

If you're looking for a non m-dot branded one, I have heard good things about beach to battleship in north carolina. Easy swim, and relatively flat course. I had planned on it being my first, but I scored an online slot for canada, so that will be my first.

My main criteria for my first IM will be as Kyle wrote...it gets me excited; a beacon to train toward.
The second is like TriSooner wrote...16-24 weeks of training weather leading up to the event. I live in Texas too, and it is 102 in the shade of my front porch right now.

i'm not afraid of sharks, but probably will do vineman, since it seems to be about the closest non-branded im. thanks for all the help.
