Question for the Ladies
could just be a fluke or it might just be late. I have had that happen occassionally. 15 hours a week of training would not likely be the reason to cause a missed/late period. Usually, body fat, or lack thereof could indicate regular loss of your period.

i'm experiencing the same exact thing....two weeks late, 4 negative pregnancy tests. although, i'm in the peak phase of my training and it doesn't feel like i'm training THAT hard--and i'm (unfortunately) not underweight either.
this month i'm chalking it up to a fluke/training. it's common to have stress (physical and/or emotional) throw things out of whack. if i don't get my period next month, i'll call the doc.
sorry i can't offer much advice--but thought i'd let you know that you're not alone!
Are you on the pill?
*edited....I only ask this because sometimes the type of pill you are on will interfere. I take Yaz and for a long while - it was hit or miss on whether I would have a period or not. I would have all the "fun" symptoms but nothing else. I did the same, bought pregnancy tests, called the gyno and they said sometimes it just happens especially with they type of pill I have.

Hmm, no, I've been off the pill for about a year. And I'm only down 3 pounds (my glorious race weight, wish it were more like 10 pounds). I guess I should enjoy not having another thing to worry about and keep training! Perhaps my intense race weekends are warding it off for now.
"Whether you think you can or can't, you're right"
Body weight, stress and peri-menopause are the three things that come to mind. Sounds like you don't believe yourself to be underweight. How old are you? I hit 40 this past year and I see slight variations that my doc chalks up to pre, pre, pre menopause. Oh really? There's more fun to come?
Stress is a huge one. Especially if you are stressed about getting your period on race day and you are thinking about it alot. Stuff like, "oh, I need to get my period before the 12 this month so I will be on schedule to be done with it by the 17th of next month for my race." That, right there, will mess with your cycle. Either way, if you don't get it soon, go see your gyn.
That which does not kill me makes me faster...
Yeah well we were trying to get pregnant and that is the norm for me--my last cycle before we quit was 48 days(and that was one of the shorter ones) so I got nothing for you. Funny how a 40 yr old body can still act like it's 17. Now that I am back on the pill--all good. Personally I LOVE being on the pill so I know I will NEVER have my period during a race. I can't imagine doing an Ironman and having to stop for that or carry a tampon around.
Ok any of you guys lurking don't laugh and be thankful you don't have to deal with it.
Women's bodies are so fickle. I wouldn't worry to much about it because really, why stress. If you know you aren't pregnate and if you hadn't had any abnormal paps and you are still getting your other symptoms and you aren't having any other problems generally I'd say you are ok. Just chalk it up to stress and training. If yours are anything like mine when they skip - look out! They sure make up for it! If it goes another 4 weeks... I'd give the gyno a call just in case.

Wouldn't hurt to give the gyno a call. Usually (at my office at least) you can get a nurse to call you back and answer some basic questions.
I think I can, I think I can, I think I can...
I agree with the ladies, I'd check in with your doc just to be on the safe side.
If it makes you feel better I'm kind of in the same boat, and I've been sailing in this boat for the last 2 years or so. I'm on the pill and should have regular periods but I don't. When it does come, it lasts for a day, two would be maxing it. My gyno has checked me inside and out and everything has come back normal. She contributes it to the high amount of training.

I'm in the same boat lately... I think it has to do with a pill switch. I also should call my doc though.
For those of you stressing about a period on an IM day... check out the Diva Cup. Soooo awesome :) I have played with birth control to avoid a period on IM day before, but honestly I just don't worry about it now. Actually, I find it is worse for me mentally and power-wise if I'm racing the weekend before.

REALLY? I tried one of those (or something like it) years ago, and didn't have luck. It looks like you have to "get it right" for it to work, so maybe that was my problem.
I too have messed with bc , but usually so my race is not the weekend before because I find my performance is WAY under par then. I do a Sunday start so if it's the immediate Sunday, no problem, but the week before ---BAD! funy. I will look into that again though.
I know there are a number of similar products out there, and yes, part of it is placement, but that wasn't too hard the second month on -- it often just kinda falls in place once you sorta know what you are doing. I don't know what has changed in them over the years, but it could even just be a material that is used now that works better? I don't know. For $30 and not using a tampon in YEARS, it was defintely a worthwhile test for me.
Now I just have to need it again ;)

Hmmm ok, well I will order it. It still says change after 12 hours so can you fudge with that? As in if you are doing an IM and are not so fast---getting there 2 hours before, getting your crap after the race..........don't want to be worrying about changing but I am light anyway... usually.
A side note, for all you young ladies who are hoping to start a family one day, don't mess around with not having a regular, or at least semi-regular period. It can make it very hard to get pregnant. I was running everyday and at a low body weight (for me) when we started trying to get pregnant (I was 26 at the time) and it caused some infertility issues my gyn blamed on my running. It can take a while to work it all out and can be very frustrating. I don't mean to alarm anyone and this does not affect anyone the same way. I just wish someone had warned me. I would have gone to the gyn sooner and would have followed any steps possible to keep training but take care of my reproductive health at the same time.

And I would say +1 to that ...having gone throug the same thing.....we stopped trying as of my 40th bd last month. Although after fertility drugs I now need to drop 20 pounds :( so not exactly low body weight...aahhahahahahaah
So sorry to hear that Brit. That's a big deal. Hope you are okay. Any thoughts toward adoption?

You know it is what it is. We could "go further" with the whole thing, but I just sort of want to mentally move on. It's way too stressful and disappointing. And yes, have thought about adopting...mixed on that. I would probably want to go international, and China for example has a 3 yr wait now. And because of hubbys age we would get an older child...We looked into adopting from fostercare but they make it so seriously difficult, so will probably just stick to Tri's and travel. I will probably go back to work or find some more volunteering to do. It's all good. I am just mad all I have to show for it is a flabalanch! ahahhaahahah

Well, my heart goes out to you. My sweet sister in law has the same story and I have seen her pain up close. Don't want to be a downer, but I am happy to sit in the sadness with you for a while. I know you are a very strong person, but the death of a dream of children is not something to be swept under the rug. I wish you all the best as you move from "trying" into a time of grieving that loss. I wish you much joy in your future travel and triathlons endeavors.

Britt I have definitely gone longer... there is no toxic shock issue like with tampons. I tend to rinse the Diva Cup when getting ready for work in the am, and then again as I get ready for bed at night. I don't even notice it the rest of the time. I guess if you have a heavy flow and fill the cup, that would be a different issue, but I've never had that problem.
And thanks for the heads up Toni!

Excellent topic!
I am definitely going to purchase the Diva Cup and give it a try.
It seems the monthly visit can be quite a pain when making plans
for any event not just the race day.
Sincerely,

Ok, so it's been about 6 weeks since my last period. I've also started training at higher intensities and racing since then. No I'm not pregnant.
I've had all of the mood swings, food cravings, and blemishes that typically go along with my monthly cycle, but that's it. I'm not complaining, just curious. Honestly I really don't think I'm training THAT hard (haven't sunk into overtraining yet) and I have my nutrition balanced quite well. Why would this happen? I'm only focusing on the bike anyways, I maybe run or swim once a week and I'm not loading on any more than 15 hours/week of training.
