Headaches after races?
I get those sometimes, and I just chalk it up to not getting my caffeine fix on time. I have coffee before the race, but then no other caffeine until way later (I am used to having a diet Dr. Pepper at lunch). Dehydration also likely plays into it.

Who knows?
It's been frustrating--all the more so because it triggers my wife to start yelling at me about how all-consuming triathlon is as a sport. As in, "I hate these races! You're always so worthless after you do one!"
*sigh* Saturday was not a good day.
Anywho, my buddy says I just need to take a Hammergel at the end of the bike and see if that's enough to carry me a little stronger through the run. He may well be right, but I've never used the gels before.

I get the same thing. I always just assumed it was dehydration/heat/extreme effort. If you are worthless for the whole day after a triathlon, I think that means you are doing it RIGHT. It shouldnt be easy. My apologies to the wife.

Well, that's good. Maybe it's not a problem after all. That'd be fine.
My apologies to the wife.
Heh. No worries. She's not listening--and won't! She made that abundantly clear yesterday.

We might be zeroing in on a cause...

After my races/rides, I make sure to come home prepared to take over .Otherwise, I hear all about how triathlon is taking over my life too. Yesterday, after my 1st century ride in 100 degree heat, I came home, hubby promptly laid down for a nap, and I began fixing dinner for the kids, folding laundry and overall kid/ house duty. Needless to say, I was a vegetable at 7pm.

I fight that same problem sometimes too on the headaches and the time constraint. I've found that I have to seriously buck up after races and I plan it all out so I can take a short nap when I get home from the race and be refreshed to still help with the kids etc. We've 2 kids too and its a long day for my wife to come to the event, chase both boys around, get all excited for a few minutes as I come into view, then leave again, then resume chasing the kids..
I've had similar headaches from time to time and usually feel that its hydration related. Although I do note that PJT was onto something above:

Do the headaches begin about same time as this "discussion?" ;)

Probably elevated BP along with the heightened exertion. Do you have a history of migranes or do your headaches only come after races? Waking up early for a race (if you're not used to it) along with dietary changes, stress of going "faster" than training pace, dehydration, and even some allergens in the air could trigger your headache. Lots of reasons, hard to single any of them out.
I was reading through my Tri Bible (Joe Friel) he talks about this - maybe it is the lack of sodium.
I had Hammer gel (from the flask) for the first time a couple weeks ago - It was vanilla flavor - it was good but it was like drinking syrup. It was VERY sweet and it did make my stomach a little icky feeling for a couple minutes.

I got a question that I hope somebody smarter than me can answer. A lot of times after races, I find myself not just exhausted by practically debilitated by a ripping headache either right between my eyes of in the center of my head. They usually come on about 4 hours after the race, after I've had a chance to slow down, catch my breath, and get start getting re-hydrated.
At first I thought it was simple dehydration, but it seems like no matter how much water I drink, the headaches are still there. And even if I drink gatorade or something like that and then lie down, they still are only dulled a little. It's like having a migraine, and it sucks.
Your thoughts? Is this a sign of bonking (or near bonking), or am I missing electrolytes? It seems like it has to be one of those two, but for the life of me, I can't seem to get it worked out. The during-race nutrition thing has just not been happening for me lately on anything longer than say two hours.
