i know that this is a silly question, but what do all the ironman categories mean? i would like to do an ironman next year, and i have heard that florida isn't too bad. so i went to check out the application, but couldn't even figure out which category i would apply to? i have only done one 1/2 im, but never qualified for anything lottery wise.

thanks in advance, and sorry for such a basic question.

I am not clear on what you mean by category.

An Ironman distance race is 2.4 mile swim-112 mile bike-26.2 mile run. Completion times are between 16 and 17 hours for the finish. The swim leg and bike leg also have cutoff times that vary by race.

Catergory to apply to? Just apply for "general entry". Or do you mean participant division or category? Things like MPRO & WPR, M35-39, W30-34, etc? Those are gender (M) and age group (35-39) and those are assigned automatically.

ok, i see categories c, s, m and cfs. i don't see a general (but perhaps that is because it is sold out already for this year)? how early do i need to register to get a spot for 2010? thanks again.

It's sold out to general entry. Not sure where you're finding these categories?

I assume cfs = Community Fund Slot. You can buy your way in for a lot more money if you really want to be there and price is no object...
