RR: 2009 Healthnet Olympic
Congrats on your PR's! Sounds like some interesting things happened and you still came out on top! Great job!

Great to see the improvement, sounds like a good day. Congrats, nice boost for your fall HIM.
Tell us, did the arm rest fix include duct tape and a sock. Inquiring minds need to know.
Glad you had a good race. I gotta say that mine wasn't--AT ALL--what I'd hoped for, but I finished and lived to tell the tale, so I suppose it's all good in the end.
See you in Litchfield Hills? Fairfield?

Great job! Congrats on the PR and good luck with the HIM training. I hope the shoulder feels better for that race.

For the aero pad - here's the turn of events:
As I'm taking off my shoes and socks to get into my wetsuit, I look down and think, "hey my sock would fit right around the arm rest." So I take off one of my regular socks, wrap it around, and well, I can still feel the screws inside, but certainly much less.
As I'm coming out of the water after the swim, running toward T1 - it dawns on me - I have TWO socks. I could stuff one inside the one wrapped around the rest... Well, that worked great. I stuff a sock in there in the delirium of T1 and off I go.
It wasn't until T2 when I'm frantically looking for my race sock that I realized that I hadn't stuffed my other regular sock in there - I stuffed my RACE sock in there!! I had a good chuckle over that as I blew a good 15-20 seconds looking around for the sock... No ductape, but two socks and a hectic search were involved.
Sorry your race didn't go as planned DannoE. I hope you're not injured and just looking forward to the next one! I'm probably going to just train between now and the Toughman in Sept. I'm really psyched that the shoulder survived, because I'm going to put some real effort into the swim leg for that race. I'm going to really focus on technique first, and an injury would have loused that up.
Thanks for the comments.

Ehh... I changed my mind and wrote a race report. You can read about it if you want to, but I came through okay. And thanks!
And like I said, I'm glad you had a good race. It sounds like you've got a strong base, and that will serve you well going forward.

I found out about the penalty - It wasn't either of the things I suspected... I was penalized for abandonment of equipment because my race number fell off my bike. Sheesh. I left the evidence lying on the ground, with my number on it !@!#!
I spoke with the ref, and I certainly don't dispute the issue - my number had in fact blown off - he found it on the course. But, it only had one hole for the twist-ties they gave to secure it on the bike, and it ripped. At some point I remember thinking "wow that's making a lot of noise" and I noticed it was no longer secure. I pulled it up to my aero bars to try to hold on to it. Later, I remember noticing that it was gone, but not when it actually fell, so it never dawned on me to stop and look for it.
I guess if something like that happens again, I should just tuck it into my shirt pocket. Oh well.

That does suck... and I bet if you had pocket'ed it, you would have gotten a penalty for not having your number on ;)

Short Story:
The Healthnet Olympic Tri on June 13, 2009 was my first race of the season, was my B/C race for the season, was 2nd Olympic distance and my fourth tri overall since I started training in June of 2007. My training this year has been more HIT focused on generating more speed – especially on the run. Overall, I am thrilled that this was by far my most comfortable race, and I PR’d by a fair bit. While certainly not a competitive time yet, I’m making steady progress. I saved the shoulder that had been troubling me, and none of the other minor troubles leading into the race bother me.
I had a minor technology mishap (FR 305 died night before the race), a small gear mishap (I lost the pad for the right arm rest of my aerobars on the drive to the race – I solved it in a funny way I think), and I misjudged nutrition just slightly (I was ravenously hungry in the last ½ mile).
Otherwise, I had no real troubles that I knew of – but I was slightly surprise and confused that I was for some reason assessed a penalty. Might have been unintentional drafting, or might have been because my 6 year old would have made Trisooner mad and ran through the chute with me… To be fair I was 100% alone finishing at the 2:58 mark. When he ran out there, best thing to do was drag him across. (Yes Trisooner, I asked my wife to keep him from doing it, but since I was all alone coming in, she let him go… )
But it was a great race overall, in particular, I didn’t feel like I was swimming to stay alive, I held back on the bike a little bit, and although slow, I ran most of the run, rather than trot. I feel like I’ve made real progress and am well on my way for my training for my 70.3 planned in Sept.
Tale of the Tape:
1500m swim / 37K bike** / 10 K Run.
Swim 39:34 (~2:25/100 Yards)
T1: 1:42
Bike: 1:14 (Avg ~18.5 MPH)
T2: 1:51
Run: 1:01 (~9:48/Mile)
Total with Penalty: 3:00.
Last Olympic was
S: 2:10/100yards ( Difference was expected due to shoulder troubles)
T1: 6:16 (Long run to T1)
B: Avg 18.5 MPH
T2: 3:24 (Was really woozy)
R: 11:11/Mile
** Charting the Distance on Map my ride agreed with the original race plot they had on the site, showing 37K as the distance. On race day, they stated that it was a 40K. My powertap recorded it as about 37K, so I’ve treated it as such.
