So next Wednesday is my 4 week mark of no running due to a stress fracture and I can run again. I have been biking and swimming my butt off and am excited to run again. Previous to my injury I had completed a half marathon and my long runs were around 14 miles. Would y'all start back and build up or is it "possible" to maybe do a 4'is run the first couple of times and then a 10 for my long run and stay there for a couple of weeks then "meld" back into my training plan? I know what I SHOULD do, but IMC is Aug 30th. I would think I wouldn't be at square one since I have kept fairly fit with the biking.

I'd come back slow. build up and see how everything feels. Even with IMC in August the smart thing to do would be to take it easy coming back. The last thing you'd want to do is re-injure it and have no choice.
Stress fractures are horrible things to deal with. A dear friend of mine didn't allow herself to heal and came back to soon and suffered through years of problems.
Your fitness may be top shelf, but I feel it's important to be safe and come back slow. You want to be doing this years from now right?

Yeah, I KNOW that is the right thing to do---my last one took nearly 5 MONTHS to heal. I have just never been in the middle of IM training (2x for out of destination marathons but nothing this big).
Thanks Anton!
Hey are you going to Florida again? We are all booked :)

Absolutely take it slow! I KNOW it's a hard thing to do so try with all your might to take it SLOW and see how you feel, then start increasing your mileage if you feel good, meaning no pain from prior injury. It won't take long to get back to where you left off. The same thing happened to me when I was training for my first marathon. Because I was out of training for almost two months and only had 6 weeks before my marathon when I returned, I didn't do as well as I had initially hoped (4.5 hrs vs 4:00 hrs), but I was more happy that I ran injury free and continued to do so for years!!!!

Like everyone else has said... Go slow.
I have to admit that I am surprised you are running after 4 weeks... I had two stress fractures last year (different feet), and both times my doctor had me spend 4 weeks in a walking boot, followed by a period of just increasing my walking distance, then adding in some running, etc.
His comment was that if the stress fracture wasn't completely healed, it could get worse and the fracture could extend completely through the bone (resulting in a much longer healing period).
Sorry! Not trying to scare you, but take things slow and back off if it doesn't feel good. Good luck!

This is in the tibia(and higher up) and we caught it early--it had just started to give me a "niggeling" of pain. Different from the last couple where I ran until I couldn't walk (yes OCD). I am sure that what you said "it could get worse and the fracture could extend completely through the bone (resulting in a much longer healing period)" is what happend last time when it took almost 5 months. I gave it 3 weeks, ran, rested ran then finally went to the dr after I had to walk 6 miles of a half marathon ---no I wasn't thinking correctly. THAT one started feeling like a ITB but as it showed on the MRI the fracture was all the way over on the tibia.

All good advice. Thanks you guys/gals. I will take it easy. I guess if I have to walk part of the run on my IM I certainly won't be alone, had just had high hopes for this one.

Anton--see you there :) I am getting excited again. Right about now I start wanting my "mouse" fix. We will be there all week through the following Friday. Is your wife doing the half again?

I took almost 6 weeks off of all training (minus some swimming I did do) and I'm also training for IMC. Instead of long runs I've been doing double run days. Ok, so I've been really back for 2 weeks now and yesterday was my second double run day. I'm going to stick with this approach - it's not ideal, but it's better than trying to build up mentally and physically to long runs in such a short period of time. IMC plan: hammer the swim, hammer the bike, death march :)

If we're in the same boat come race day, find me. We'll death march that marathon together!

I would say wait on the long runs. Coming off an injury and jumping into a ten miler sounds dangerous to me. I hate to say it because it totally blows, but for a long run, you'd be better off pool running.

Then again, if it were me, I probably wouldn't be able to resist testing it out and seeing if an 8 or 10 miler caused any pain.

My daughter and I will be support crew for my wife in the half. Should be a fun time. It's going to kill me to not be running.

If you kept your fitness up, test yourself at IMC, but not before. I've seen so many articles about people that cut way down on running and piled on lots more of biking miles, then did a PR running a race. Have confidence.

We get in on Thursday and leave Wednesday...Yes Mary Lou is doing the half again! She loves it and says it's the only half she'll ever do.
And TryScott...sometimes it's better to be the good husband than the good runner! Good on you...See YOU there!

Thanks for all the advice gang! I will just take it easy and continue to work on the bike (which I am not so good at so this whole thing may be a blessing in disguise). If I can get the swim in in a 1:05'ish and the bike in 6:30 then that will leave me PLENTY of time to walk the thing if I have to.

Anton and TryScott , will see you there. The last 2 years I have been with family and friends so meeting up was hard. May have a brother with me but will try and make it. I am only doing the marathon as usual so may try and come out and watch the half.
TryScott--being a supporter is often just as fun I find--plus you are at DISNEY!!!! I am such a kid :)

+1 to still being a kid at heart. Growing up is overrated.
I tried the grown up thing...it didn't work out.
