Finding a triathlon on the left coast

My wife wants to go to Napa Valley, and I can't imagine traveling that far without doing a triathlon. So my dilemma is finding a triathlon close to Napa Valley.

Wildflower is my first choice, but my wife isn't thrilled about driving half a day to Napa Valley from there. Also, I understand that most people camp, but we would not consider dragging camping gear from Florida. There is a chance I could talk her into an RV rental, but it could be a tough sell. How easy is it to get a hotel near the race, and does the race sell out fast?

My second choice is Escape from Alcatraz. Main problem is getting entry. I'm not far from one of the qualifying races, but I might be real far from a qualifying time. Anyone know what time a male 30-34 needs to be at Florida's Great Escape to qualify? The person I emailed from their website did not answer.

What races am I missing? Not that I have anything against small races, but if I travel across the country, I'd like to do a big one. I browsed trifind.com, and nothing stood out. My preference is a HIM or shorter.

Try searching visually for a triathlon with TRImapper.com

http://www.trimapper.com/tris_na/index.htm?state=ca (give it 10 seconds to load)

the colored markers are different race types
clicking on the marker will identify the race

TRImapper.com - visual triathlon finder
TRIJUICE.com - triathlon news and resource site

Thanks, I forgot about Vineman until I saw it on trimapper. One would think that would be the most obvious event to do if you want to visit Napa Valley.

I would go with Vineman. Honestly I looked into renting a camper/trailer to take to IMC--once you rent for a min of a week, gas it and pay for a camping spot you may as well get a hotel room--and have a private shower etc :)
