Where do I start...
Find a tri club in your area (a cycling club is usually a good reference also). Many of them run newbie clinics and even if they don't most have members who are all too happy to help in any way they can. Can also be a good resource for equipment contacts. Discounts are good, but rented, borrowed and otherwise used equipment can be cheap and effective for a first timer.
My bike is made up of a hand-me down frame (my father is a 55+ road racer) and a bunch of used parts that I was given by various members of the club I joined.
One of the great things about this sport is the sense of community and support among the athletes.
First thing is to find a training plan that is suited to your abilities and aspiration (competitive or complete) and distance - There are lots of plans out there to choose from. A good place to start with is the training page here on trifuel. Once you find one - then start following it. Also look for a Sprint a few months out and sign up for it - mark it on your calendar - now you have a target / goal.
